We are ending our cruise in Civitavecchia and will be spending a couple of days in Rome afterwards. I am not familiar with Rome so looking for recommendations on which area to stay in. Also any recs in those areas. 6 adults and 2 teenagers. not budget but ones that will break the bank.

The first thing you need to know in your planning is that Rome hotel rooms tend to run small and some hotels run even smaller than others. You are looking for rooms for 8 people. Do you need family rooms or can you go with 4 double rooms? What is the combination you are looking for?
I love the location of the Hotel Smeraldo (I've stayed there twice) but I have to admit that my room there came in as the second smallest of my travels. (a Tokyo hotel barely beat it out for smallest) As you think about rooms and room combinations pay attention to the square footage listed on the hotel description.
The other thing to think about is how you will be arriving to Rome and how comfortable you are with public transportation. You may want to pick a location that is walkable to most of your key sights that you want to see. What are your sightseeing priorities?

Our recent stay at The Spotlight Boutique Hotel was terrific! The hotel is new, room is good sized by European standards, bathroom was large, excellent breakfast and professional staff. It is located a few blocks from Termini Station which we like because of its access to public transportation.

I would use www.booking.com to narrow your search. The historic center near Piazza Navona and Campo de’ Fiori is convenient, but also Prati (Vatican side of the river) and Monti near the Colosseum) are popular and may be less expensive. Enter your criteria in Booking and see what looks good. You can always directly contact the hotels you are interested in and book with them if you,prefer, but it is handy to use a search site to educate yourself and narrow down a list.

A couple of apartments might work for you.
We stayed at Incentrum (a sort of apartment hotel, but more apartment than hotel) and were very pleased with our choice. Their buildings are in a very convenient area, near the Spanish Steps.
Be aware that the Babuino building doesn't have an elevator, and the Vittoria one does, if that's a requirement for anyone in your group.

We have stayed a couple times at The Lancelot Hotel which is close to the coliseum, fairly close to the Termini Train station and close to the Metro line. There are numerous restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Plus I found the rooms to be larger than normal and the breakfast is very good.
