Going to Naples in mid June. Would love some restaurant suggetions
and the best place to pizza!
We were in naples some yrs ago. i know they say it is gritty and yes it can be but we loved it.
we cannot recom any one place but we thouroughly enjoyed ourselves were ever we were.
many family owned pizza spots and they were great. something about pride and family makes all work out.
there may even be aw wait but amazing they were just start early enuf. gd luck naples is special!!!!
We were there for only an afternoon and an evening before catching a plane, but what a great city! Want to go back. Had time only for one restaurant meal, but it was a very good lunch at Pulchinella's. Our young server was also a chef, so we let him choose our menu. Beautifully presented and not expensive.
Also had great pizza from a tiny storefront. Neapolitan pizza is a simple dish, and I suspect many places do it very well. The price was so cheap, we thought it would be individual size, so ordered two, and had enough for a family!
Be sure to try the clamshell shaped, ricotta-filled sfogliatella from a street vendor. You'll be wearing powdered sugar for the rest of the day, but the pastry is memorable.
Next time I'm in Naples I'm going to stay longer and try some places recommended on this website: http://www.annesitaly.com. Buon viaggio!
Honestly, I can't imagine you would go wrong even in a random hole in the wall - as long as everything is made fresh and from scratch (which it always is), you'll score a great meal. Now...the usual caveat is that Neopolitan pizza is not for everyone (it's a bit charred and a bit soggy so the texture is very different than a lot of people are used to - but it's super fresh and the basil and tomatoes are delicious). Some folks tend to veer toward the Tripadvisor recommended pizza place that's packed to the gills (can't recall the name). I would also add that if you have a sweet tooth, you should definitely sample a sfogliatelle pastry or a baba cake and an espresso at any of the nice caffes they have. I love the grit of the city too but it is a bit overwhelming, so I had to drink multiple espressos to get through the days.
A friend and I went to Naples way, way back in 2003 and the one and only thing we did in Naples was eat pizza at a place recommended in RS book. Now, I can't be sure and can barely remember it, but I think it was a place called "L’Antica Pizzeria “da Michele.” If you can get a hold of RS Italy or Naples from 2003 (not sure if he kept the same restaurant recommendations in later years), you can confirm. In all my years since, it still remains the best pizza I've ever had. What made it so great was its simplicity: dough, sauce, mozzarella, olive oil, and basil. It was the quintessential margherita pizza. This seems less common in the states as we like our pizzas piled high with toppings. Again, I could be wrong about the name, but in looking it up online, the interior looks like the place I went to. There's a very good write up about it on this travel blog: http://www.earthtrekkers.com/napoli-birthplace-pizza/
For excellent Neopolitan pizza, go to i Decumani. It was inexpensive and probably the best pizza we have ever eaten. They have tables with waiter service.
For a more upscale dinner experience, I highly recommend Terrazza Calabritto near the waterfront.
Beautifully prepared seafood, creative recipes.
