I quit micro-planning for restaurants because I spent too much time researching, and never at at my planned restaurant anyway. When getting there, I found them either too expensive or the menu not appetizing to me.
But I have found a great place to read about food, domestic or foreign, is at Chowhound.com.

In Rome all last week. Went with several of Rick Steves suggestions. Da Giovanni is quaint and homey. Had dinner there twice. Also enjoyed Sacro e Profano and Osteria da Mario (Friday night). Giolitti is busy and touristy for gelato, but it is worth it. The gelato is superb.

Have you tried the search bar above. Many of us have answered this question several times. I suggest you search eac(city separately above, I.e., “Rome dining” and so on.

Best Lasagna of my life was in Assisi at Trattoria Pallotta, just of Piazza del Comune.
This was in the warm weather of late summer and the dish was NOTHING like the heavy comfort food version I am used to in the USA and is more suited to fall and winter weather.
This was light and almost airy. I believe it was a Bolognese sauce, because there was more meat morsels than there was a robing of tomato sauce.
I thought it reasonably priced at 10 euro. And it was SO good.

The family who runs the restaurant also operate a hotel in town. Both go under the name Hotel Trattoria Pallotta online, and the two operations are not adjacent or even nearby each other, so make sure you get the restaurant, if that's waht you want (there is an arched opening in the wall across from Santa Maria sopra Minerva on Piazza del Comune. The restaurant opening is in there.

Also recommended but not tried: Ristorante Vicoletto. This rec came from another family operated restaurant that was full the night I asked about a table. (I looked for it for a while and couldn't find it before I got so hungry I had to eat somewhere close) The rec was echoed by my hosts, but alas, I ran out of time in Assisi to try it.
That's on my "unfinished business" list for the next visit to Assisi, along with more lasagna from Trattoria Pallotta.

We did "The Contrasts of Italy" tour last month. We arrived early and did a trip to Orvieto by train. The hilltop town was fantastic! No large tourist groups mostly people from the area. One of our best meals was at "Trattoria Delli Poggi" The pasta was fantastic. Let us not forget the smooth table wine. We could have sat for hours. A super find. The town is a "MUST" visit. Check out the restaurant on trip advisor.

In Orvieto I enjoyed eating at:

  • Trattoria Vinosus on Piazza Del Duomo.

  • ‘Ristorante Le Grotte del Funaro' (Via Ripa Serancia, 41). This restaurant is very unique since it’s down a flight of stairs in a real cave!

  • Best gelato at 'Il Gelato di Pasqualetti’.

In Assisi I ate a couple of delicious meals at, Trattoria Pallotta, a bit tricky to find under an archway across from the Temple of Minerva.

Best Gelato at Gelateria Sensi, near St. Clare’s Church.

Have a wonderful trip!

In the Sorrento area we loved the restaurant in Hotel Il Nido Sorrento. The food was delicious, at a great price with a spectacular view from the balcony overlooking of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. If you’re looking for a hotel, I also highly recommend Il Nido Sorrento. Gianni and his staff were wonderful in arranging a taxi and even gave us an upgrade without asking. The room was clean and comfortable with a fantastic view of the sea and Mount Vesuvius.
