My husband and I are interested in vacationing on the Amalfi Coast. What town would you recommend to stay? We would like somewhere that is picturesque and quaint where we can access public transportation. Hotel recommendations are greatly appreciated as well.
We've stayed twice in Sorrento, and love it there. You can bus take the local train to Pompeii, the buses tp Positano, or a ferry to Capri, which we did. The second time we were there, we did Mondo tours with my son and then girlfriend, and it was wonderful, with stops in Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi. They use an 8 passenger Mercedes va, and they stop for lunch at a beautiful hillside restaurant with fantastic views. The first time, we stayed at Hotel Muchelangelo, which was only a couple of blocks from the main piazza, and the second time at Villa Monica, a B&B up on the hills overlooking the bay of Naples and the city, which was awesome. Enjoy your trip!
We made Salerno our home base as it is a transportation hub. Buses, trains and ferries go in all directions. We stayed in Salerno Centro B and B, right on the edge of Old Town. It was a great experience. Research them and if you decide to book with Lena (the hostess who prepares the most fantastic Italian breakfast every day), try to get the Positano room with its own private terrace. There are only 3 rooms for guests, so you get to share travel stories with the other guests over breakfast which we loved. You can ferry up the coast, take a train to Pompeii or Paestum or Naples. If you go to Pompeii, go first to Naples to the Archaeological Museum to see may of the frescoes they removed from Pompeii. If you ferry all the way to Sorrento, eat at Delfinos on Marina Grande! Don't miss Ravello! You are going to LOVE the Amalfi! Oh, and B and B Salerno Centro has A.C.! You will need it in August.
Positano is quaint with memorable views . Bucca de Baco hotel has been one of the most memorable hotels for me. A view of the ocean is the best way, mornings again are wonderful to watch with cup of coffee. The city has easy access to other key towns with the ferry.
Sorrento has some nice features. Its nice to stay closer to town. If you stay a view of the bay is beautiful in the misty mornings roll over he town and cliff. Looking at Mount Vesuvius one can only wonder . It does have train access to Pompei and Herculaneum
we stayed at La Tonnerella and the view was amazing and the rooms were nice, but it was little walk to town.
enjoy
