Please help : NEED SOME ADVICE ON HOTELS IN VENICE

first time travelling to Venice, i am wondering if anyone could give me some advice on where to stay as i am in a situation, where I will have to return to the marco polo airport the following day to pick up another friend who will be travelling with us for the rest of our italy tour. I will be in venice for 3 days. at first i thought i should just book a hotel in mestre for the first night, and then go into venice for part of the day.. return to my mestre hotel, and in the morning go back to marco polo airport and then carry on to my original hotel that i booked with is the hotel saturina & international. can anyone give me some other suggestions? perhaps just to book 3 nights in venice and travel back and fourth? im also concerned about costs for water taxi back and fourth.
thank you ,

You DO NOT need to take a water taxi to get to the airport. There are land buses from Piazzale Roma running nearly continuously for 8 EUR each way, and I think they have a round trip in a day discount. If you want to travel around Venice like a pro, buy a 3-day vaporetto pass. If you do this, you can also add the round trip airport bus for an extra 12 EUR.

You could also book a hotel walking distance from Piazzale Roma or the Santa Lucia train station. You will still be in romantic Venice, but close to the bus station. Mestre? Ugh!

Stay in Venice the entire time. Mestre is not why one visits Venice. Since cost is a consideration, forget water taxis as they are super expensive. You can get back and forth to the airport and all around Venice just using the bus and the vaporetto.

I appreciate the feedback. i have been stressing out so much as to what to do . Im in Europe for 19 days visiting 4 countries, so cost is a factor. i will take the advice given. if anyone can recommend some hotels that would be appreciated. i cant get an additional day at hotel saturina as of now, as they are booked. we are 3 friends travelling together .

I agree with taking the bus and then the vaporetto to your hotel. I stayed at Ca Gottardi in February and enjoyed it. It is located close to the Ca D'Oro vaporetto stop on a main roadway (Strada Nova) - closer to the Jewish quarter, a short walk to the Rialto bridge, a slightly longer walk to St. Marks (but a lovely ride on the vaporetto). There is a grocery store nearby where you can pick up some great picnic food. Another hotel I have stayed at and enjoyed is Hotel Campiello - which is very close to St. Marks square and also located close to a vaporetto stop. The costs of a water taxi are really high (130 Euros) and only makes sense if you are traveling with several others or you have an extremely early flight out of the airport. Enjoy your trip!

hey tina
what are your dates in venice? don't stay in mestre, you can take a bus or train from piazzale roma or venezia santa lucia to airport. i've been to venice three times and i prefer to stay in canareggio area, near train station. the vaporettos can get crowded and then you luggage. you really don't want to be climbing up and over stairs, over bridges and pushing them over cobblestones. you can check out sharing a water taxi which may cheaper for you, lots of options out there. make sure you pack light, you can wash in sink or have a place with a washer, we bring a clotheslines with pins and either a pod or some detergent in double ziplock. you may get different opinions here but thats my 3 cents worth. if interested i can give you other options, how many people and where else are you traveling to? you can take it with a grain of salt but since you are on a budget, like how we travel. rather spend my $$$$ having fun instead of hotels, food, transporation. you may wanna stay in an apartment, more room to stretch out. if interested let me know and i can send you a message.

you can take a bus or train from piazzale roma or venezia santa lucia to airport.

Bus, Piazzale Roma to airport, yes.
Train, Venezia Santa Lucia to airport, no. No train service at airport.

To the OP--if I were in your situation, I would find a place in Venice (not Mestre), somewhere close to Piazzale Roma and as others have said take the bus back and forth to the airport. Besides looking by the train station, you can also look for places roughly east of Piazzale Roma. The bridges in that direction are easier to cross with luggage than the Calatrava bridge, some even have ramps if memory serves, and you're in an area that feels like Venice.

Hotel Saturnia & International is a really really nice hotel. It's a great choice for Venice and has its own private water taxi door. But others are correct in saying that there are multiple ways to/from the airport to this hotel:
1) Water taxi - most expensive and quickest
2) Alilaguna - cheaper and really slow. Can be VERY crowded
3) Vaporetto to Pzl Roma, then bus from there to airport

We stayed in Hotel ai Ponte Mocenigo and can recommend it highly! It is easily accessible from the San Stae vaporetto stop which is a few stops from the train station and the bus stop, Piazzale Roma. You do not have to go over bridges with your luggage if you walk to the back entrance from the vaporetto stop. This was our favorite hotel during our whole trip! Ask for the back room downstairs as it has everything you need in a hotel room! The people are friendly and helpful, The breakfast in the charming courtyard is wonderful. The surrounding area is quiet and lovely.

We are just back from 3 days in Venice and stayed on Giudecca, at an apartment called Stella Marina. The location was awesome - a quick vaporetto ride from P. Roma in one direction, and from St. Mark’s in the other direction. I remember seeing the Alillaguna boats at Giudecca but don’t recall exactly where. Would be perfect for 3 friends traveling together. We stayed in apt # 3, which has downstairs: one double bedroom and bathroom, kitchen, living room and laundry room (washer and clothesline, no dryer). Upstairs: one bedroom with 2 twin beds, loft with double bed, bathroom. The apt has a/c, which was much appreciated in 80’ weather. Spotlessly clean and close to restaurants, bakeries and cafes. Only one bridge to cross from the Palanca vaporetto stop. We very much appreciated being on Giudecca away from the crowds and noise, but just a short 15 min. Ride to St.Marks. We paid about 200€ per night. Highly recommend.

We are staying 3 nights in Venice in Sept and are staying in an AirBnB apt. In the Canneregio district. Got a great price on apt and, as I understand it since I've never been to Venice and also from studying maps, this is a good location; train station not too far, catch a vaporetto to the Tre Archi bridge and our host meets us there!

Good luck!

Also, is there any chance your friend can navigate his/her/their own way from the airport to the hotel, without you backtracking? You could plan to call, email, or message with any tips that you learn on your first trip in.

If your friend getting to hotel from airport alone is doable, get someone on this forum to give you the name of a hotel that is easy to reach and directions for getting there from the airport.

In 2008 I stayed at Ca' del dose Camere. This place was easy to find, homey, clean and very close to Doges Palace and the Vaporetto. Vaporetto's were so convenient I didn't even consider the more expensive options. Have a great trip!

Hi Tina, how was your trip to Venice? In my opinion, if you go to Venice, you should stay at a hotel in Venice and save money on something else. You need to experience the Venice life day and night time. Enjoying the views during day time, taking a walk at dawn to dinner, walking on the alleys and no many times we walked to St Mark's square, we still took the wrong turn at the wrong alleys. That was part of the fun memory of Venice. We stayed at the Palazzo Contarini Porta Di Ferro, it was very quaint and very easy to get to everywhere in Venice, and it wasn't expensive at all. We took the water bus to Lido beach one day and it was really nice. Round trip water bus costs only 15 euro per person.
