Outside Milan

Hello! I will be spending 9 days in italy this december , flying into and out of Milan. I have no itinerary except that i want to spend 3 days in bologna. I would love to find a small town (accessible by train/bus) near the mountains or somewhere that i can be in nature (in december) and possibly do a light hike/walk. Is hiking in the dolomites possible in december? Is it too touristy because of skiing? Any ideas are appreciated!

Look at Bassano del Grappa, a lovely town in an Alpine setting in the Veneto region.

When in December is the key. Early in the Dolomites, hiking is possible, weather permitting.. Late, and you are talking Christmas holidays and it gets busy.

Castelrotto makes sense at that time. You should be able to go to the Alpe di Siusi where at least some walks will be possible. It is closer to the mountains than Bassano del Grappa and is more charming, IMO. To, sand weather permitting, it is a short bus ride to Ortisei or Bolzano. Skiing gets serious after Christmas.
