Need a place to stay in Stresa?

Stresa seems to come up fairly often on itineraries these days, although with the track work between Arona and Stresa during summer maybe less so than usual. We would like to spend a night there in September (after the track work is finished) and I was discouraged looking at hotels—-so many of the recommended hotels are “classic” upscale hotels with ornate lobbies, and carpeted rooms with brocade draperies, plush furniture in dark colors, and bathtubs. We much prefer bright modern rooms with wood floors, light or bright colors, and walk-in showers.

After numerous searches using Google satellite view, I came up with 2 I had not seen mentioned at all; both fit our criteria and are adjacent to one another on the lakefront street across from the promenade, very close to the ferry dock.

Boutique Hotel Sempione is a 3-star newly renovated hotel offering (small) modern lakeview rooms with balconies, and a shared rooftop terrace (always an attraction for me). It may have escaped notice by Rick et al. because of all the bad reviews on Tripadvisor. But those are all dated 2019—pre renovation. The hotel now gets a “fabulous” rating of 9.7 on booking.com by people who have stayed there in 2022 and 2023.

Next door is Il Bar Gigi, a little bakery, bar and bistro which offers modern rooms, suites and apartments upstairs—-I think 6 total, each different, but all with lakeview. So new there are no reviews on booking.com, but I will not that lack against them in this case.

I haven’t decided which to choose yet.

Lola, as evidenced by this question, I know nothing about Stesa. We usually stay at Lake Como. I'm thinking 2025 spring.
How does Stresa compare to Varenna? Does one stay in both places, or choose one.?
I should be finishing up details for our upcoming 2024 trip.
Instead, my mind wanders to 2025......

Hi Lola, I haven’t stayed at either of your options, so I can’t comments specifically on them. It looks like both are very close to where the Alibus from Malpensa airport stops.

One well-known option that might still give you the style what you want is Hotel La Palma.

You may want to be in-town for your stay, but my favorite unique place to stay is on tiny Isola Bella - just a 5-minute ferry ride. It’s the island with the gorgeous Borromeo formal Italian garden & villa to tour. My small hotel choice is Hotel Boutique Elvezia. The rooms are tastefully modern in an ancient building, and there you definitely want the water view rooms. It’s my favorite place to get over jet lag!

@Pat, I have stayed at both Varenna at Lake Como and on later trips at Stresa multiple times. I wouldn’t stay at both of them during one trip. They are each very nice destinations. At Stresa, I enjoy walking along the promenade, going out to the close islands by a quick ferry, taking the ferry up to Villa Taranto and enjoying the expansive gardens in that setting. Also, taking the ferry in the opposite direction to go to the Santa Caterina del Sasso is a nice place to go up into and take beautiful photos. There’s also options for more cities up into Switzerland along the ferry stops.

This is a very quick bit of history. If you go to Stresa, be sure to read about it in more detail - fascinating! https://www.visitstresa.com/About_Stresa.htm#:~:text=Stresa%20Visconti%20was%20made%20up,now%20reach%20Stresa%20more%20easily.

Hi Jean, I do like hotel La Palma but the room there is 100€ more than these other two options. We just need a pleasant place for one night before we take the ferry up to Verbania, where we will be spending a week hiking in the area with HF Holidays. We do have one free day there, and I am thinking we will head to Villa Taranto for the gardens.

I like Boutique Hotel Elvezia and Isola Bella a lot, and may head there next time. This time we need to do laundry, and there is a self-service Lavanderia in Stresa not far from the train station. We can drop our clothes in the washer on our way to check in, then return to move them to the dryer and go have an aperitivo somewhere (it will be early evening). And then retrieve our dry clothes and put them in our room before we join the passeggiata and look for a place for dinner.

I am now calling our trip the Giro di Laghi. We were going to spend a week hiking in Abruzzo and some time around Naples, then fly out of Rome. But HF Holidays canceled the Abruzzo week for lack of participation, and we elected Lago Maggiore instead. In addition to Stresa and Verbania, we will be staying 2-4 nights each in Locarno, Lago di Garda, and the one non-lake town of Bergamo ( the hotel you like). Plus time in Switzerland.

You have thought of everything Lola !! With that laundry/check-in/aperitivo combination !!

Thanks for the tip on those two hotels. And Jean thanks for the one you mentioned, the Elvezia. That sounds really lovely.

When we went there, we stayed in Baveno, the next town north of Stresa, and really liked it. But it’s good to know about other options from trusted fellow travelers.

We took the ferry to Verbania for the day then and met up with a couple from the Forum who had moved there temporarily with their dog Barley. A lovely day!

Lola I hope you have a wonderful Giro dei Laghi!

@Kim, I think Barley is the luckiest dog ever! He has gone on so many adventures in Italy, even with the Covid restrictions, and also now in the US!

Thanks, Kim. I actually planned to have us stay in Baveno—-I found a nice little apartment and the necessary Lavanderia close by. But then I checked the train schedules and realized that getting to Baveno adds an additional train transfer (at Stresa), to go the extra few miles. At least it does on the current train schedule (through early June). That seemed like a bit much at the end of the long travel day from Lago di Garda. So I am glad I found good options in Stresa.

I’ve been to Stresa a bazillion times. My preference is La Fontana, near the end of the luxury hotels. Modestly priced and family run. You get a slight discount if you book directly. It’s a nice walk along the promenade into town.
This past trip I stayed at Hotel Fiorentina with shops and restaurants all around. They have their own restaurant as well and if the weather is nice, an outdoor garden for meals under the grape vines. Family run for a long time.
