Naples hotel convenient to train and airport

Hi, we are trying to fit in a quick overnight in Naples so that we can visit Pompeii before starting a Rick Steves' Best of Europe tour in Rome. We are hoping we can fly into Naples airport (from Barcelona where we are attending a wedding), stay overnight in Naples, visit Pompeii, then take the train to Rome. Any suggestions for an affordable, safe hotel that would be convenient for that? We do not need fancy (although AC and private bath strongly preferred). Locally run hotel with character a bonus (i.e., no chain). We appreciate any suggestions.

We stayed at Napoli Bonita, a locally owned B&B steps from the Toledo metro stop. We didn’t travel to and from the airport, but it is convenient from Napoli Centrale. We’d stay there again in a heartbeat.

There are no hotels close to both places. You might download the flat-rate taxi sheet to see your possible exposure to that cost. We walked a mile, rolling our bags, to get to the train station from our luxury hotel, Palazzo Decumani.

It seems to me that luggage storage is part of your planning. The luggage storage at Pompeii happens to be very safe and often used by posters here. But if my hotel were convenient to the train station, I'd explore whether they can hold the bags until the late afternoon, after you check out. Of course, you could also verify if you can check your bags in the train station, since you have to come back there.

Note that the cheapest, advance-purchase Frecciarossa (much, much faster) trains to Rome are good on one particular train only. If you are late or early for your train, the ticket is no good, and not refundable. There is lots more to do in Naples, but you have a plan already. Don't plan to "grab some pizza", since all the best pizzerias are (as we would say in the US, but it's understood in Naples ... "No Slices") We waited an hour for two seats at a common-table at Gino Sorbillo.

There is a serviceable hot cafeteria-type cafe inside Pompeii. Not gourmet food.

Best place near the airport, with only an easy ten-minute walk, is Terminal 1 Guesthouse. Close to brand new, clean, well-equipped with TV, fridge, large private bathroom, comfortable beds, breakfast included, and even a little gift upon check-in.

We have not been to Naples yet, but we will be there for a night in September before taking the train to Rome, so IU have been looking at possibilities.

If you stay near the airport, you will still have to get to Napoli Centrale the next day to head to Rome. Also consider how you are getting to Pompeii and what you will do with your luggage while there. So I would suggest that staying near Napoli Centrale would be simplest. You get there from the airport by Alibus:

Walk to a hotel nearby (there are many candidates) and sleep there. In the morning, check out but ask them to hold your luggage while you visit Pompeii. It will be quick and easy to pick up before boarding your train to Rome.

I am looking at Palazzo Firenze, a couple blocks north and west of the train station on Via Firenze, not on Piazza Garibaldi. It is a 4-star hotel but reasonably priced, and it gets very good reviews on booking.com and Tripadvisor, especially the most recent ones.

There are lots of other options close by.
