My wife and I will be in Lucca for three days near the end of September, and I am looking for a B&B or small hotel within the city walls. We will arrive and leave by train, so proximity to the station may be a slight convenience, but a central location is the deciding factor. If anyone has experience with a suitable location just outside the wall, that is OK. Any help and/or testimonials are appreciated, as are ideas for seeing the local area, and any good places to eat.
Thanks in advance,
Dave Robathan
I stayed at Hotel Rex very near the train station recently. It's a comfortable hotel with a good included buffet breakfast. It's outside the walls, but only a few minutes walk into the town of Lucca.
Have stayed at Le Violette twice in Lucca for a total of 5 days and the hostess couldn't have been nicer. She speaks fluent English and Italian (she's originally from Seattle). And it's a short walk to the train station and inside the walls. just a block away from the best Gelato in town.
I stayed at La Violette and it was super convenient. It is inside the city walls but also an easy walk to the train station. You can easily walk around inside the walled area anywhere, since it isn't very large, but I recommend renting a bicycle to see more of the town faster. There is a cycle rental place a block or so from La Violette. The nice thing about that B&B is that there are several room types available depending on your budget, private bath or shared, etc. Book ahead -- her place is popular since Rick recommends it! And yes, it is convenient that she is so conversant with American ways. She does not live on the premises.
