lodging in Rome near ancient sites

Hello fellow travelers.

Next week, my husband and I have a last minute opportunity to spend about 5 days in Rome (he's attending a conference & I found out I can join in at the end). We'd like to see Pompeii and are open to other short day trips outside the city but want to give Rome most of the focus on this short trip. (Feb. 13-18; fly out the 19th.)

We are definitely Rick Steves' style travelers. We love history, walking tours, walking, and getting to know local life. Did I say gelato?

LODGING: We're considering the Nicholas B & B for its location and reviews. Any recent feedback on that one? Or others? The Nicholas B&B person, Loreto, has been lovely on email. We're still finalizing our itinerary so thought I'd ask in the meantime.

Thank you.

Elaine,
You might consider looking a Hotel Due Torri. We booked this charming hotel based on positive reviews from the Forum and Booking.com. It's a small historic building once a palace that housed Cardinals. It is centrally located, 26 rooms, quiet location and minutes from Piazza Navona, etc. We booked directly with the hotel website. www.hotelduetorriroma.com

Another vote for Hotel Grifo. Have stayed a few times and like the hotel and the area.

Elaine, let’s talk gelato! Be sure to find Old Bridge Gelateria if you are near the Vatican or in Trastevere. Yum!

A flavor called Profumi de Sicilia is amazing.

Gelateria del Teatro, the best in Rome. No artificial colors or flavors. Beware of “green” pistachio gelato at other gelato shops!

My wife & I stayed at Nicholas Inn in 2017 and we thought it was a lovely place. It’s fairly basic but has everything you need and the restroom is quite large for Europe. They also partner with a cafe down the street for comp breakfast. I seem to actually prefer this over a hotel buffet, cause it’s out in the local culture.
Street noise was not an issue
We loved being so close to the little piazza in Monti and the Monti neighborhood was very convenient location overall.
Anyway, I loved staying there and I’m sure you will too!
