We are staying in Rome for 3 nights. Is it best to stay by town center or further away and take a bus or subway in. There is a big cost difference.
Time is money, as they say. I'm a proponent of spending a little more and staying where you can walk to most major sites. I'm not sure what your budget is, but I've stayed at the Hotel Aberdeen and recommend it.
I am with Rachel! We have stayed at Hotel Aberdeen four times over the past 10 years and they just get better all the time. They are such a nice and helpful group of people. Never been disappointed, they are close to the Termini, underground, buses, taxi's and walking any where except Vatican City. Just make sure you request a room away from the breakfast room unless you like to wake up early to clanging dishes and loud voices.
I stayed at the Aberdeen last May. It does have the BEST staff ever--so nice, friendly, helpful. But, I did NOT enjoy the location at all. Unless you are taking numerous train trips and need to be close to Termini train station, there is no reason to stay anywhere near this location. The hotel itself needs work. The breakfast was very sub-par.
The time, energy, and cost to get in and out of the city is not really worth it. We stayed in a wonderful little boutique hotel in front of the Largo Argentina last year. Very affordable and excellent service.
Check out www.albergosantachiara.com. Hotel recommended by our Italian neighbors, great location, right behind the Pantheon. Hired a driver from airport to hotel.
We just got back from Rome a month ago and stayed at Hotel Grifo. www.hotelgrifo.com. We absolutely loved the location and the experience. It was not unreasonably priced at all! I think we paid around 115 Euro per night. The breakfast was great, the staff was extremely helpful and friendly, the room was clean and had everything we needed, and the location in Monti is within close walking distance of the Colosseum and Forum as well as Metro stops and bus stops. The neighborhood of Monti is also great because it is very charming and has lots of wonderful restaurants and shops. I think it was definitely worth it to stay right in the center of town!
Stay at the best-review, lowest cost hotel in the center of town. You will enjoy your vacation more by being minutes from historical sites in the evening. Otherwise, you'll tend to weigh whether it's worth heading back by bus each time, etc.

GREAT POINT! I had always looked at it just from a convenience standpoint - you make it a no-brainer in my opinion.

We stayed at an awesome apartment in Trastevere this past July. I actually found out about it on the Rick Steves Italy forum. The location was perfect. We walked to all the sites--but we are walkers. But is was also close to a tram and bus stop. The apartment actually looks like its picture and has everything you need down to launder detergent. It's called Apartment 19. I booked it via homeaway.com but it also has its own site. It was also a really good deal.
The Nicholas Inn offers great value and a terrific location. It's really close to the Colosseum and the Forum. It's not a traditional hotel -- more like a B&B. It's small and popular, so you have to book early: http://nicolasinn.com. I stayed there last year and was very impressed.
I think the most important feature is location, that's why we chose to stay at Downtown Accommodation.. so close to all the monuments, Colosseo, Romano Forum are few meters away.. couldn't be more easy to discover the city.. Great hosts too, we contacted them by email, they were so nice, they gave excellent suggestions about how to visit, where to eat, where not to eat, buses, metro.. http://downtownaccomodation.com Remember.. Always stay in the city center!
