We will be in Varenna for 5 days in the first week of September (2025). We have not been there before. We are husband and wife without any children on the trip. We would appreciate any suggestions for the best hotel to stay. We like good views and clean hotels. Thank you.
I stayed in Hotel Royal Victoria on a Rick Steves tour. I was there a few days ahead and splurged on a balcony room facing the lake for my non-tour days. Wow, it was wonderful. They also had a really awesome buffet breakfast....with Prosecco. When I moved to my tour room it was fine. Overlooked the piazza and church but I really missed the views and wished I'd have asked about paying up for the nicer room.
Varenna doesn't have a lot of lodging options, and September is still high season. I recommend booking something now.
If you can’t find a room in Varenna, try looking in Bellagio which is not far from Varenna. We always stay in Bellagio, lots more restaurants and hotels.
Thank you for that tip.
Hotel Villa Cipressi has beautiful views and gardens.

we had a beautiful stay here
Hopefully the poster has booked her hotel for September.
I wasn't impressed with the moderate priced hotels in Varenna. And while Bellagio offers more accommodations, too many fellow tourists choose it for my comfort level.
Instead, I suggest searching Menaggio, which is a 10-15 m ferry ride away from Varenna. We stayed at the Hotel Garni Corona, which I highly recommend.
For breakfast, treat yourself to Pasticceria Cassera Moretti. For lunch or dinner (reservations), try Osteria Il Pozzo and Cera Bistro. Avoid the convenient, yet very disappointing, Caffè Centrale.
Honestly, Varenna will still be packed in early September and if you haven’t booked yet, you probably won’t find a room. Personally, I’d stay in Colico, a beautiful village not far from Varenna, but without the hordes
