Like others have said "best" is subjective.
We stayed City center at Hotel Mignon, which was up an ally and an easy walk to shops and restaurants, to the train station for our day in Pompeii etc. Our room had a balcony with a table and chairs and they have the most beautiful little garden for breakfast (included in price with made to order coffee drinks) and we took advantage of the Bar and did an early evening happy hour with snacks. We would 100% stay there again.

It was several years ago, but we also enjoyed the Hotel Mignon for its convenient and quiet location. It was well priced, modest, and staffed by very friendly folks. Our room also had a balcony that overlooked what appeared to be a high school classroom But my impressions may be colored somewhat: This was the year we’d retired as teachers, and sitting on the balcony sipping coffee watching some other poor guy behind the desk was almost as rewarding as our travels around Sorrento and Pompeii. Stay safe.

Denny- It was a primary school, and out balcony was across from the playground/play yard, we loved watching the kids play kick ball during the day and just seeing kids be kids. It never woke us up and once we shut the doors all was quiet. At night it was quiet and next door to the hotel was a nice market and also a vending machine that had little bottles of Champaign! In Sorrento you need to think if you want to be up in the hills with the fabulous views but needing to take some sort of shuttle to get to the train station/restaurants/shopping or stay in town and walk out your front door and have access to walking all over and that city came alive at night, so many street performers, people walking around, the little side streets with the merchants, the cafes, just all of it was so fun . For us, that was easy, we like to be in city center especially because we were using it as a base for the Amalfi Coast.

I agree with the Hotel Mignon recommendations. Letizia’s comments about individual wants/needs sum things up clearly.

We loved the Ulisse, but it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. It's classed as a hostel, because evidently there are some group facilities, but there are plenty of very nice double rooms, beautiful public areas. helpful staff, and it's just about 3 or 4 minutes walk from the town center. It's also on the way down to the docks, where you will find wonderful seafood restaurants. It is - or was - inexpensive, especially considering the quality of the rooms and public areas.

It's in Rick's books, which is were we found it.

We’ve stayed at Hotel La Tonnarella three times, we love it. On a cliff with mind blowing views, easy walk into the city center, a great buffet breakfast included, a very good restaurant, lots of terraces and beautiful flowers all over, free parking, A/C, and best of all, they have a lovely private beach (elevator to get up and down) with lounge chairs. Some rooms have large terraces with the incredible view of the Bay of Naples, Mt Vesuvius, Capri. Some rooms have balconies, and the rest have patios.

Hello Letizia. The kiddos we saw in class were waaay bigger than primary school age. But I also just looked up how long ago we made that trip and it was 2008. Maybe the school changed? Maybe the Mediterranean diet is a lot healthier than I thought and they just grow ‘em bigger in Italy? 🙂. Who knows. Take care and safe travels!

In early Nov 2019, stayed at Palazzo Tasso (33 via Santa Maria delia Pieta - palazzotasso.com) 2 nights. Great staff, location, room & breakfast. Moderate price despite RS guide $$$ listing. Right in old town between "alley" and main drag. Easy walk to bus & train stop. Our room overlooked the street/passegiata. Small elevator. Rooms are above ground floor. One block from Kebab di Ciampa (good fast food). Really good veal limone at nearby Ristorante la Fenice. Have hotel staff make reservations - maybe extras with meal.

Check out the Hotel Regina. We stayed there last summer. Location is great, rooms are nice (worth it to upgrade for a balcony), wonderful breakfast, and the rooftop terrace (where you have breakfast every morning) is a total knock out with views across the bay to Vesuvius. We were a three generation family - and we all loved it!

Another vote for Antiche Mura. It's very well located just a block or so from Piazza Tasso but just far enough for noise not to be an issue. Lovely grounds - kicked back with drinks from the outdoor pool bar after long days of sightseeing - and a superb staff. Good breakfast in a large, sunny room with a terrace, too.It doesn't have a view of the bay but that didn't bother us 'cuz we were out and about most of our days.

Another vote for the Antiche Mura, where we’ve stayed twice in the past 10 or 11 years. No view but lovely grounds and handy to both the train/bus station as well as downtown Sorrento. Great service, breakfast, heavenly-smelling lemon trees on site (typical of the entire Amalfi coast).
