hotels in Rome, using American Airline miles

I need some help, I am (woman) taking my son, his wife and 3 teenage grandchildren to Rome on the way to Florence, in June. We will be staying in Rome for 3 nights and I want to use my American Airlines miles to pay for the rooms, will need two rooms. Has anyone done this before with miles. I am not sure what area to stay in. The online company is rocket and so far they are no help at all. Navigating the online site is not easy and the information given for each hotel is minable. Do you have any suggestions. All the reviews for hotels are so mixed it is difficult to go by them. We are flying into Rome and then taking the train to Florence. Thank you

Look for hotels in the Pantheon, Trevi, Spagna, and Colosseum areas. These are all in Central Rome and within walking distance of most of the main sites. You might also look at Trastevere which is a lively and interesting area with lots of restaurants etc. but a bit further from the Centre. Termini is close to the main railway station but not such a good neighbourhood for children.

To get more info and good hotel reviews from people who have stayed at the hotels, make a list of the hotels that appeal to you from the American Advantage site and cross check them with the listing on Booking.com.

I have paid for hotel rooms before with American Airlines miles, but it's probably not something I would again (these days, to me, the miles are worth more for flights).

Just a general suggestion: before clicking to pay for any hotel using airline miles (American's or any other currency) take a look at what the cash price for that hotel would be. You may find that paying in miles is no great bargain. You should always take a look at what your miles would "buy" you in flights, too, so you have some idea how much those miles are worth to you (ignore what anyone else tells you your miles are worth).

Sometimes using airline miles or points to pay for hotels can make sense. Sometimes it doesn't.

You might also mention them here on this Forum. Chances are some people here have had experience with a number of them.
