Hotels in Rome near Centro Storico - Recommendations

I've been checking the forum, and hotel websites and found a hotel we really liked - but couldn't believe prices!
A friend recommended we stay in the Centro Storico area so have been looking in that area. Hoping for a recommendation from another traveler to help with our planning!

ps - Someone recommended Hotel Varese but Ithey have not responded to my emails (sent 2 days ago).

Thank you!

Travel dates are September 28th - 4 nights ++ 1 night October 7th before we fly home.
This is our (husband & me) first trip to Italy!
I was shocked to see the hotel I initially liked was something around $500/night. Didn't know rates were that high!
Ideally, hotel under $250/night.

Rome/ we stay near Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. Our hotel is priced higher than you want. Once we stayed we up way above the
Villa Borghese and it was nice but not near what you’ll want to see. We used AirBnBs the last few times. Some were really nice and less expensive than hotels.Try calling that hotel that hasn’t responded!
What are your dates??

hey hey janice
as you can see prices have gone way up, plus it’s high season september/october with it being harvest season, celebrations & many festivals, cruises starting & ending in rome.
giving a few places to check out:
hotel lorico
magnifico rome
LHG comfy rooms
residence regola
check out booking.com. put in your filters and see what they offer. some have breakfast included, A/C which you may need, stairs/steps, elevator, fridge/coffee pot. your decision. we liked campo de fiori, piazza navona, pantheon. lots of walking (wear comfy shoes), if needed catch a taxi at stands, no hailing.
like hotels that have front desk to ask questions and info. remember check-in is usually 2-4pm check-out 10-11am, most have luggage storage before check in.
hope this helps out, you can always come back to ask questions, posters here to help give good bad and ugly. don’t know what your plans are, any attractions book now. many are time/date stamped, already booked, check tours. have fun

Janice,
I'm not sure if this is your "area" but there are two lovely small hotels near Termini (and thus, close to subway line) I've stayed at (both found in Rick's guide books):
Hotel Aberdeen is wonderful - small, private hotel with great staff. I've stayed on two separate occasions, and when I returned after more than a year I was greeted as a long-lost friend by the staff and owner. PS- That trip the only room available was their largest and "best" room -- which had been vacated that morning by our favorite tour guru himself!

My third time in Rome was part of one of Rick's tours and we were at Dharma Style Hotel in that same neighborhood. Again, a lovely smaller hotel that was perfect, although I missed my friends at the Aberdeen.
Have a wonderful trip - Rome is amazing, and very walkable!!

I suspect Hotel Varese has not answered your email as they are pretty well booked up around that time. On the website they do have double rooms available for arrival Sept. 29 - Oct. 1 at €308 per night. Sept. 28 is fully booked.

If that is a location you like, you could go to booking.com and search Hotel Varese using Sept. 28—Oct. 1. It will show “none available” but use the “show map” button and it will produce a map with other hotels in that area, listed by price (probably their lowest, non-refundable price, so expect to pay more). Choose 2 or 3 you like and go to each hotel’s own web site to book. They may offer discounts for booking direct, or other benefits.
