Hotel train station

My wife and I will be flying into Milan and then taking a train to Bologna. Spending either 2 or 3 nights there before moving on to Varenna. Looking for hotel recommendations for Bolonga around the main train station. Thank you

I would never stay near a train station and especially not in Bologna with so many other lovely areas there. We stayed near the main piazza, lovely.

This is what the Man in Seat 61 says about hotels near Bologna Centrale-

If you're staying only briefly between trains, hotels near the station with good or great reviews include the Starhotels Excelsior & Unahotels Bologna Centro, both directly across the road from the station. For somewhere cheaper, try the B&B Aurelia, 3 minutes walk away.

The B and B Aurelia has generally positive reviews on Trip Advisor.

For one night, I would stay at the Starhotels Excelsior suggested above. For 2 or more nights, I would book something between the station and Piazza Maggiore. It is an easy walk with luggage along Via Indipendenza, especially non weekends when it is a pedestrian street. We arrived on a Saturday in late afternoon and joined the passeggiata.

We've stayed at the Starhotels Excelsior twice. It's nothing spectacular, but it was clean, very good breakfast, within easy walking distance (.5 miles or less) of some good restaurants, and on several bus routes into the old town. If you stay here, you'll want to join their club before booking for a pretty good discount. And it's right across the street from the train station.

In some cities it is best to avoid the train station area because it is seedy or gritty. But we did not feel that way about Bologna at all. A bit busy with traffic, but so is the area near the main piazza.

Thank you for the suggestions. My wife has some mobility problems so trying to keep walking distances to a minimum. If it's not to far from the train station maybe we can look at Bolonga centere

I use booking.com both for research and usually booking but it also can be used solely for research.

I stayed at the Hotel Internazionale on Via Indipendenza a few years ago.
It was really nice then, don’t know about now.
It’s on booking.com so you could read reviews.
I do remember walking back to the station and it didn’t take more than 15 minutes.

We stayed a few years ago at the UNA Hotel, right across from the Bologna train station. UNA is a reasonably priced hotel chain throughout Italy. The room was modern, clean, and reasonably priced. For the one night stay to break up our trip between Venice and Rome, it served our purpose.
