Hotel Recommendations in Venice, Florence and Cinque Terre?

Hi Rick Stevers!
My husband and I are going to Italy Oct. 6-24 and are just getting around to planning the trip! Do you all have hotels you love and can recommend in Venice, Florence and Cinque Terre? We will splurge for a high-end place if very special, but don't usually go for the ultra-expensive places. We prefer nice, smaller places and getting to know people. Thanks for anything you can share!

We recently stayed at Hotel Ala in Venice on the recommendation of someone on this forum (Robert, I think?). It was perfectly located- steps from San Giglio stop and Alilaguna Orange stop which comes down the canal directly from the airport. No bridges or steps- not much more than 100 yds to hotel door. On a canal (gondoliers passing our window/small balcony) and a quiet campo yet still very close to San Marco (5 min walk). Comfortable room, nice bath, good bkft, friendly reception.
As we were checking out we noticed a RS My Way tour group checking in- so it might not be listed in his book, but his tours certainly use it!

We really liked Hotel Calzaiuoli in Florence. Located midway between Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio, across from Orsanmichele church. Might be a bit of a splurge but was worth it to us for the location, spacious room, very nice bath VERY comfortable bed and hearty bkft. Surprisingly quiet although right on the pedestrian Calzaiuoli.

Good luck!

Hi Christine, Thanks so much for your reply! I will certainly check these out. We are very late finding rooms as we are leaving in 3 weeks, but ah well, that's adventure for you!

Just got in last night from the RS Heart of Italy tour and tacked in a few days in Venice. In Florence we loved the hotel Torre Guelfa truly a beautiful place with a tower that gives you an incredible view of Florence.

Depending on how long you will be in Venice the Ca Vecchio Pozzo apartment through VRBO is excellent. Fully equipped apartment with canals right outside your window. Like living in a postcard.
