I'll be Venice with my husband and 2 adult kids in September. I am looking for hotel or apartment rental recommendations convenient to popular touring sites. Advice?

We prefer to rent apartments from a reputable local agency instead of owner-direct sites like VRBO or AirBnB. They provide provide support if you need it, and will meet you at the closest vaporetto stop or other location, guide you to the apartment, give you the keys,and help get you settled in.
The two we have used, and will recommend, are Venice Red House and Views on Venice.

As for location, we really like the Dorsoduro area. Also San Polo, but that can be trickier for first-timers to navigate.

Do something different - check out Istituto San Giuseppe. great location on a canal midway between Rialto bridge and San Marco. monasterystays.com

I can recommend this place. We just stayed there a few days ago. I haven’t had a chance to leave a review yet, but it was wonderful. Exactly as pictured, plenty of space for 6 people, ac in each bedroom plus living room, great communication with owner, great location on a side canal just off the grand canal with only one bridge to cross with luggage. https://abnb.me/bc7f6uMPYAb

That is a nice apartment in a very good location. But there is no availability at all for the next year and beyond. All dates are marked out.

we stayed at Ca Pozzo inn, short walk from train station. they have family rooms, nice, modern inside, decent breakfast, friendly staff, reasonable price.

Have stayed at Pensione Guerrato several times and have always been pleased. It is my understanding that in addition to the hotel, they have an apartment to let. Check their web site and, if interested, shoot them an email to check availability, prices, and such.
