Hotel near Rome Fiumicino

I will be arriving at the Rome Fiumicino mid-day on September 11. I leave on September 13 at 10:00 am. I am thinking that it would be best to stay near the airport because of the early flight.

Can anyone recommend a hotel that is convenient, yet has some things to do (restaurants and a walking area)? I would would love to find a place that is near a train stop between the airport and Rome. I looked at google map, but it is hard to tell if a place is truly walking distance from a train stop.

Are you intending to explore Rome? Ten is really not super early, so I would encourage you to stay in the city. That said, many have reported having a pleasant stay in Fiumicino itself (Hotel Tiber is one I think I have seen mentioned), but they are usually just arriving or departing expeditiously and not using it as a base for Rome.

Thanks for the responses.

Re going into Rome: If I can find a place where I can explore and pass my time, I probably will not go in. I have been many times. I was hoping to find some place that would be small but interesting ( a town with church, some history) and on train line that would get me to the airport easily. I even considered Naples, but it is too far.

If I don't find anything, I will decide to go into Rome and take an early train.

I will check out the links for Fiumicino.

Fiumicino is lovely.
I try to spend a night there either before renting a car (if not going into Rome) or after my trips with a car. (I drop the car off at FCO and take a taxi to the town; reverse the following day in time for flights to USA)
It's a lively place on the water (Tiber canal and sea) with lots of good places to eat.

We stay at the Hotel Seccy; you can walk to the canal and the restaurants. I'm not going to tell you it's the finest hotel, but it's more than okay; they have a variety of rooms in different sizes and for different prices. The cheapest rooms are small. Very nice staff who will book restaurants if you ask. I've also read good things about HOTEL TIBER.

I would not want to stay at one of those big chain hotels in the no-mans'-land between the airport and Fiumicino town, but in Fiumicino itself.

For dinner, there are many options: For pizza and a range of local dishes at low prices, CLEMENTINA.
For a great seafood meal, PASCIUCCI; it's well known as one of the top seafood spots in Lazio; they have tasting menus and also allow you to order a la carte.

You can walk to both from the SECCY.

Here is info, and pics, of our two dinners that last time we stayed in Fiumicino:

If you stay in Fiumicino you could consider a day trip to the ruins at Ostia Antica, probably easiest by taxi. I am one who likes Hotel Tiber. The hotel has a shuttle service to FCO so you could take that and then the Leonardo Express into Rome. Enjoyed watching the fishing fleet arriving and departing and wandering down the street to where the canal joins the sea - lots of people fishing there. There is a large harbour for the fishing fleet and private boats - that’s always interesting for a wander. And the hotel has a nice roof top pool and terrace. Depending where you are flying to you will need to be at the airport 3 hours before an international flight or 2 hours before a domestic one.

I took a 6 am train from Naples to FCO changing at Termini. My flight left at around noon……never again, I was flying home and traveling for well over24 hours by the time I walked through my door!

Personally I would stay in Rome and take a cab in the am for the flight. In the early morning with no traffic, you are less than 30 mins via taxi. A 10am flight probably is too earlier for a direct flight so I am assume you are doing a connecting flight. Being at the airport by 8, 8.30 should be plenty of time. That way you could spend a pleasant, last evening in Rome. We have done it several times.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have changed my flight home to Sept 11 so I will only spend 1 night! With this change, I will definitely stay near the airport. I am so happy to go home the next morning after arrival and it simplifies my decision.

My non-stop flight FCO to LAX on ITA departed at 9:30 - my friends' departure to Miami departed an hour later. So there are direct trans-Atlantic flights back to the States in the AM, thus reason to show up three hours in advance.
