Hotel in Varrena, Venice, Florence and Rome

Any suggestions for won't break the bank hotels in the above cities? Definitely want convenient location and comfortable accommodations. Love small boutique places that add to the feel of the city but larger hotels also okay. Convenient to transportation since we won't have a car. We will be traveling from the end of April till mid May.

Thanks
Sharon

I would recommend buying the current Rick Steves Italy book, there are several hotels listed for each city and how to get in contact with them. I’ve used his books for the last 10 years and have had good experiences.

I have stayed at the Hotel San Carlo near the Spanish Steps in Rome twice: for several nights in June 2017 with a Rick Steves tour....and for 6 nights last week on my own. It was a good fit for me because:
1. Within easy walking distance of Pantheon & Piazza Navona
2. 3 minute walk to Spagna Metro stop
3. Lots of cafes and restaurants on adjacent street (and superb chocolate Gelato at Venchi) and in area
4. Very helpful staff
5. Reasonable price (and small discount if cite Rick Steves)

Ca'Angeli in Venice is right up your alley.

Look at Hotel David in Florence. I haven't stayed there but friends raved. We enjoyed the Hotel Pendini in Florence, but it is not exactly cheap. Super location and breakfast, though.

In Varenna our choice is a lakefront room in Albergo Milano. We always stay in the annex (Casa Rossa) in the top-floor room, which is large and bright, with a nice big terrace overlooking the lake. Lots of stairs to climb, though. If you would rather not, I am sure the rooms with balcony in the main hotel are very nice as well. Their restaurant (La Vista) is very good, and sitting outside on the terrace always a delight.

In Florence, we enjoyed our stay at Casa dei Tintori:

It is a small B and B close to the river, one bridge upriver from Ponte Vecchio. An easy walk to the Duomo on pedestrian streets (once we found the route). We were traveling with our two daughters, so stayed in the Green room and were very comfortable. This room can also be set up as a double with sitting area which would be nice. The regular double rooms (Indigo and Red rooms) might be less money if you preferred that.

With regard to "...won't break the bank hotels...", it will really help us point you in the right direction hotel wise if we know the size of the bank you don't want to break.

I'd like to be around $200.00 a night, could go higher but since we won't really be spending time in the hotel it sounds like such a waste to spend upwards of $300.00 Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

We've stayed at Pensione Guerrato a number of times and have always been pleased and it should be in line with your budget. Google it and see what you think. We always send them an email directly with our request and they get back to us in less than a day. If you book it, let us know as we have a "back door" way to get to the hotel that will save a lot of walking.

It's never too early to start thinking in €. Today $200 - $300 is about €167 - €250. €1 is about $1.20.

Even if the websites of the lodgings you're considering have an English version, they're going to have the prices in €.

@Lo thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't even thought of that. You probably saved me a bit of headache. Much appreciated!

We love the Aberdeen in Rome. It's convenient to the train station, and in easy walking distance of Metro and bus stops. Close to a number of sights, as well.

I just checked their website, and for your dates rooms are about €140; there's also a RS discount. We did better when we were last there by emailing and booking that way.

We loved Aquavenice B n B in the Cannereggio area with the 2 lovely Maria’s who run it. The most amazing breakfasts brought to your room and chandeliers and Murano mirrors in each room. It is 20 minutes walk to San Marco Sq but we loved being just outside of the tourist hordes- plus 7 mins walk from Railway station. Venice- sigh- so beautiful!
