Hotel in Milan - Near central station or shopping area ??

We are couple who will be visiting Milan in May. I like to shop but my husband wants convenience. Where should we choose as a base for staying in Milan ? Any good hotel recommendation in around shopping area with budget not more than $ 250 per night ?

Milan is easy to get around. You can stay either near Stazione Centrale or Piazza del Duomo and be happy. The trams and Metro make it easy. I like Hotel Berna near Centrale, and recently stayed at Hotel Teco, about a 15 minute walk from the station, or a quick cab ride. I wrote about it a recent trip here. It might help you a bit.
Room rates can be high in Milan. Depends on time of year and day of week. I really like Booking.com as a source, although they will not have all of the rooms. If you see a hotel you like on Booking.com but it is not available for your dates, try the hotel directly.

We absolutely loved Hotel Berna, also! We also stayed in Hotel Gran Duca di York. Very nice, but a bit less personal than Hotel Berna.

We stayed at Hotel New York that is right across from the main train station. The Metro is one block from the hotel as well. It was so convenient to catch our train out and travel into the city by the metro! The hotel was nice too and quiet.

Milan has several shopping areas. The "golden quadrilateral" has the famous designers like Gucci, Ferragamo and Prada, and Corso Buenos Aires has more affordable stores; there's probably others as well. Which one you will want depends on your budget, and whether you are window shopping or buying.

I agree that while Milan is large, its very efficient Metro makes it very easy to get around (easier than many smaller Italian cities). My one caveat is to make sure you are close to a Metro station. My last hotel, while perfectly fine for the price, was about 10 blocks from the Metro, and Milan's blocks outside the oldest sections are long; the walk was quite time-consuming.
