Hotel in Milan and Florence

I am doing a last minute trip to Milan for a conference. Traveling alone so do not care about fancy hotels. I wonder if anyone can recommend a good economical hotel in both these cities. I am looking to spend around 50-60 euros/night. A real local feel type place would be great. Any thoughts are welcome.

First time traveling Europe alone Should be interesting.

Since Milan is a big convention town, depending on when this is will be the main determinant on the prices you see. But a single for 50-60 euro per night would be a stretch anytime. If you can find prices in that range in Chicago, please let me know.

Charlie, even the crappy cheap places in Milan and Florence begin at twice what you want to pay. I will make 2 suggestions of places I have been told of by young people was semi-decent but at that price, don't expect much. You get exactly what you pay for. In Milan, check out Hotel Rossovino at www.hotelrossovino.it and in Florence check out Hotel Crocini at www.hotelcrocini.com/en/home.html

Well you didn't say when you were traveling, but in Florence for a single the Hotel Enza, recommended in Rick's book, is very nice and inexpensive depending on when you are going. Have stayed there twice in the price range you are asking. Family run by a nice family. In Milan I stayed at the Hotel Garda which is easy walking distance from the Milano Centrale train station and also the metro station.

For Florence, I suggest you look up in Booking.com or airB&B. If you tell me its name, I might know it or at least know the area and give you an advice.
Depending the season you are traveling it might be feasible or impossible. Is 50 euros the price per person or per room?

I have a friend who just opened a bed and breakfast in Florence, knowing her, it should be perfect. Will call her this evening.

I will echo what Francois said about AriBnB. I've been doing a lot of research on places to stay in Florence, and there are many options in your price range if you don't mind renting a room in someone's home. Many of them even have private bathrooms.
