We are considering Hotel Grifo and Hotel Hiberia in Rome. There does not appear to be any recent posts on these hotels. Anyone stay at either location in the past few years? Thoughts? Hotel Smeraldo is not available for our date range.
We were just at Hotel Grifo for 2 nights in April 2024! A quaint and quiet place--clean but small. Our room was a bed and desk (but minifridge!) and the shower couldn't really accommodate a large person or vigorous hair washing (say goodbye to your elbows). The staff was SO nice and gave us a ton of recommendations for sites (including tips to come back in the offseason, which we are now doing!). Biggest surprise after being on a Rick Steves Tour: their breakfast is very minimal, and most items like fresh eggs or any special breads/pastries (including toast, to the chagrin of our British hall neighbors) were at extra cost/required an order. Espresso machine was free at breakfast though... (but only dairy milk). No bar or restaurant, but rooms had nice (sometimes shared) terraces so we brought wine up and enjoyed the air. Location was amazing in Monti--walkable to ALL the major Roman sites, a very quick cab from Termini and easy cab to FCO, and its in a cute little area with great bars/lounges and restaurants. We would consider staying there again but would make our own plans for breakfast. We're not big "hang out in the hotel" people but we appreciated the best view was out of our bathroom window:-) Enjoy Rome!!
