Stayed at the Hotel Axial and true to the review in the 2017 Italy guidebook, it is centrally located near the Duomo. As well, Nicola is extremely friendly, helpful, and service-oriented (my words). Also, the room is very tidy. Other pluses are a lobby bathroom (with a shower) in case you are sightseeing after check-out and need to freshen up at the end of the day before heading out of the city. As well, there is a living room and outdoor covered patio. However, I was a little disappointed with the accommodations. It feels more like a 2-star hotel. The furniture and fixtures are old, worn, off-kilter, and outdated. And people taking the stairs up to the sister hotel on the upper floors (Hotel Maxim) can be heard clomping up the staircase. Perhaps this was due to the proximity of my room near this part of the building. They do indeed provide a Rick Steves discount: 10% off if paying cash. I definitely took the benefit.
