Hotel Al Ponte Antico - a great place to stay in Venice

We learned of this hotel from a Rick Steves recommendation and were not disappointed! We were there in early May 2016. This was our first trip to Venice, so we splurged on a water taxi and went straight from the airport to the hotel's dock on the Grand Canal. What a great way to see Venice for the first time! Matteo and one of the staff greeted us at the dock, took our bags, and gave us a quick tour of the hotel. Then he treated us to a cappuccino on the terrace overlooking the canal. The terrace has a grand view of the canal and the Rialto Bridge. I can't imagine a better setting for a hotel in Venice. The hotel is small, and the staff and service are wonderful. Matteo cooked omelets for us each morning, and the weather was good, so we had breakfast on the terrace. The terrace is also a great place to watch activity on the canal any time of day, or to have a drink in the evening. The hotel's location is great, and the staff gave us several good recommendations for restaurants in the area. I can't imagine a better place to stay in Venice. If we ever go back, we'll definitely stay there again!

We did not reserve a water taxi in advance. We just followed the signs to the dock from baggage claim at the airport, and there were several waiting there. The fare in Rick's book was accurate and posted there, so we paid cash. I believe the hotel's website had a way to reserve one in advance and get a shuttle from baggage claim to the docks, so that would be an option, especially if you have a lot of luggage, but, as I recall, it was more expensive than just walking to the docks, which wasn't very far.

This hotel looks absolutely LOVELY! But it's a little pricey. I've never actually paid for a hotel in Venice as our only visit was with our 21 day RS tour......is this price typical?
