Good restaurants in Bologna and Venice

We are planning a 3 night stay in Bologna with a a day trip to Venice in September.
Does anyone have suggestions for great restaurants?
We also are considering a food tour in Bologna…any recommendations?
Thanks!

Our favorite restaurants in Bologna are Ristorante Donatello, Da Cesari, and Cantina Bentivoglio. The food at each is pretty traditional. The decor of the three is quite different. Donatello is a little more formal; Bentivoglio has a jazz club in its cellar (you need to request to be seated in the jazz club when you make your reservation). If you go to Da Cesari, you should try to stop at the chocolate shop across the street, Majani, which has been in business since 1796. As for food tours, we highly recommend the tours offered by Taste Bologna. We took their Classic Bologna tour and their Modena tour last fall. The food was good and plentiful, and the guides were knowledgeable about the food and their cities.

I recommend these both:
Bologna- We ate at da Cesari twice, very good.
Venice- Ristorante da Gigio, canal side location.

In Venice, Da Alvise was by far our favorite meal of the whole trip!

In Bologna we went to Sfoglia Rina for lunch and really enjoyed it. It's a little chaotic, but the line out the door says it's worth it and it was. Get there shortly after it opens for lunch; when leaving it will be lined up down the street. The tortelloni with sage and butter was scrumptious!

We also did the Italian Days food tour from Bologna. Expensive for sure, but I'll never look at Parmigiano Reggiano the same way again!

Enjoy!
