We will be visiting the Gargano region in the middle of September after biking in Salento and would like hotel recommendations in Vieste. We are hoping to staying near the old town so that we can walk to places.

I shared a hotel that we liked very much on your other thread: IL CASTELLINO RELAIS. it faces the beach to the north of town but you can walk to the old quarter in about (??) half an hour or so. It's a classic Italian seaside hotel,, not modern or fancy but very charming with very kind staff. Excellent breakfasts were included when we booked directly with the hotel, as I always do. We had a room with a large terrace.
Their pool is wonderful and they will give you passes to one of the beach clubs that are still open at that time of year (many will be shuttered by then). You can walk from the hotel to the lido. I was able to swim in mid September and the water was delightful...
Unless you just want to stay in Vieste and not explore, or visit any local masserie for dinners, you'd be best off with a rental car.
There is a large parking lot at the bottom of the historic center and in September, there are many open spaces.. If you do not have a car, the hotel an arrange a taxi but taxi prices are high, as you might expect.
Vieste is a jewel of a town!
