Florence restaurants for beef steak

Any favorites? We have 3 adults and 2 teenagers who are fussy. Are there other beef options that are more well done? 2 of us will share the traditional steak.

Antico Ristoro di Cambi. My wife and I had a wonderful experience there. Easy to get reservations on their website. The steak was incredible. We got it rare like the locals. Highly recommend

We enjoyed Trattoria Diladdarno. It's south of the river, and fairly convenient if you're going to the Pitti Palace or Brancacci Chapel. The owner made me pose for a picture with our raw steak before he put it on to cook, a treasured memory. The only other thing we ate there was pici with wild boar, which was excellent.

Antico Ristoro di Cambi is good. Our favorite was at Ristorante Frescobaldi.

Antica Trattoria da Tito. Great atmosphere. A bit off the beaten path and entirely worth it.

Another vote for Cambi. We like the Oltrarno part of Florence where they’re located, across the Arno river, and stay in the neighborhood, so that’s an added plus.

To answer your other question, no, there are no options for Tuscan Chianina beef cooked well done. There might be places doing Argentinian or other steaks that offer a range of doneness.

Expect that you will be shown steaks, ranging somewhere around a kilo (bit over two pounds) or more, and it will be cooked rare, really, very rare. The beef is very much like grass fed beef in the US, so it is tender when rare, as you cook it more, due to the lack of marbling, it only gets tougher. Prices I am sure you are aware of, I would plan on at least 50 euro per person.

There are restaurants that also serve other meats and pastas, in addition to the traditional Chianina, so maybe focus on those places. It does likely mean you get two steaks, then maybe a dish or two for the teens, allowing them at least a taste of the steak.

And no, Chianina Beef is not the "Wagyu" of Italy (Sorry, a bit of sarcasm from an earlier post on this topic.)

L'Osteria Giovanni is a great, old school restaurant that serves steak. We love our dinner here year ago, and I see that it still gets great reviews. Not flashy or instagramm-y, just a solid menu and wine list and very warm service. Would go back in a heartbeat if we're ever in Florence again.
