Highly recommend Hotel Dali (RS recommended $ Hotel) near (3 minute walk) the Duomo and other sights. Very friendly, english speaking owner, Marco, and staff will work to make your stay in Florence pleasurable while not busting your travel budget. His nearby apartments are very competitive if you are needing more than one room. When we travel we aren't looking for frills but do want clean and comfortable rooms, friendly and helpful staff, quiet but convenient location. We (three adults) stayed in one of Marco's apartments and had all of the above, plus a bit of authenticity thrown in at no extra cost! Agree!! We have stayed twice at Hotel Dali (elevator !) and also at their nearby apartment (stairs -- but there's a dumbwaiter that can carry tour bags, and there's a washing machine.)

We stayed at Hotel La Scaletta, across Ponte Vecchio a couple blocks near Pitti Palace, and a within easy walking distances to the other sights. Without knowing your budget in Euros, La Scaletta might be more or less than you intend to pay. The staff is wonderful and they may still have a chat room on their website. The ladies shared where they and their families buy gelato and pizza. Best hotel staff we've ever encountered and we still keep in touch with several of them.
