Florence Hotel Recommendations?

My wife and I are heading to Florence after our My Way Europe tour this August. Trying to book a hotel on our own is a little daunting... are there some hotels that you highly recommend? We would like to stay in the city center and spend less than $150 a night. Thank you!

Hello, I have stayed at this hotel for 4 years when in Florence, and find it quite comfortable. It is close to everything, and not overly expensive. (www.laresidenzahotel.com/ ). I am a senior and have always been able to walk from the train station to the hotel, and then to all thngs that I wanted to see in this lovely town. You can check it out, and do a google for the hotel location. It is just one major street from the Ponte Veccchio. There a a few steps to get up to the elevator, and then you will go to reception. It is a lovely old hotel, and away from the noise in the direct center of town, but as I said quite close to everything (probably not more than 10 minutes at most from all that you will want to see) Have a great time, I will be there again this July for 4 nights and can't wait to go!

Last fall we stayed at La Scaletta Hotel, at the foot of Pont Vecchio across the Arno, and walkable from the train station. They have a website with live chat plus a Facebook page. All the staff ladies were SO helpful and even taught me some Italian, told us where their families go to eat and get gelato, and were really delightful. Mention that George and Elaine recommended their hotel and you'll likely get a room with a view of the Boboli Gardens right next door. We can't say enough good things about the hotel, the rooftop restaurant overlooking the Duomo, and our entire experience with them.

We just stayed 3 nights at the Relais Grand Tour using Rick Steve's recommendation. Giuseppe and Christina were gracious hosts. Charming room with garden terrace. Beautiful tile, lovely decor, gorgeous linens. A couple of blocks from Piazza San Marco (monastery completed decorated with Fra Angelico frescos). Across the street from a convent with a historic last supper (cenacola?), and just a short walk from the Accademia. Easy walk from the train station, and a nice bar down the block -- no charge to sit, pastries and coffee in the AM; drinks and happy hour snacks in the evening. Reasonable rates and a discount with Rick Steves' book. Our only complaint - about ALL the places we stayed (including with relatives in Rome) is that the beds are extraordinarily firm...but maybe we've just gone soft in our old age.
