We staying 4 nights in Rome in September. Can anyone give recommendations on their favorite restaurants?
Recommend Da Enzo Al 29 but there’s no reservations and a long wait. But they will bring out spritz’s and it’s a great way to get to know someone.
You might also try a food tour. We did Eating Europe and it was a great introduction to the Travestere neighborhood, great food and lots of fun.
Thank you for your recommendation.
We didn't eat there, but because the entrance to our apartment was right there, we were unable to avoid the massive crowds that flock to Tonnarello, as well as the touts that constantly asked if we wanted a table. Can't say whether the popularity is justified.
I can recommend Gelateria Alla Scala, which was the best gelato we had in Rome - and a better value than Fata Morgana.
Yes, Tonnarello is wildly popular, plus there are several others scattered around, as well as a couple restaurants in the Trastevere owned by the same group. I also am not sure if they are that good, or good at marketing....but basic pastas, pizzas, and a few rustic Roman dishes are not that hard to do well.
I would agree with da Enzo al 29, they have been featured in a number of TV shows, but have resisted the temptation to expand or change. There you can be assured of getting good representations of the Roman dishes.
Agree also with Gelateria alla Scala, top rate gelato, but also try Oteleg, an artisanal place, unusual flavors, done very well.
Several good pizza places, Dar Poeta, Ai Marmi, I can both recommend.
As for other restaurants, sadly is has been three years since I was there, and things change so fast. Restaurante la Scala has been around for years, always have had a great meal there, nice seasonal menus, good mix of Roman dishes plus seafood. Otherwise, search for some recent Rome food blogs, and best of all, just roam the streets of the Trastevere in the evening, looking for small spots, look at the menu, most of the time you cannot go wrong. The Trastevere can look pretty grim each morning, cleaning up from the previous night, but at night all that seems to go away and the place transforms.
Thank you for your insight.
We got arancini at a small takeaway place on the outskirts by the river. It was recommended in an old RS book and was excellent. Sorry, don’t have the name. It was by a piazza with a small fountain about 1/5 mile to the right of the bridge the bus used coming into Travestere. This was 1 1/2 years ago.
Ai Marmi is such a truly Roman local experience IMO. Very austere environment, devoid of charm, but what comes out of the pizza oven is an excellent product. You won’t spend a lot of time nor money here.
Dar Poeta is a pizza unlike any other I have had in Rome. VERY good and a very busy place where a reservation is highly advised. Great fun to eat in the alley on a warm night, after the sun is gone. We’ve eaten outside there as late as October.
I hope I’m remembering the name correctly but I think it was Roma Sparita. We went on a friends recommendation and it was very good. Don’t know the address but it was in Travestere.
Imo, Roma Sparita is very famous for cacio e peppe. Yum! https://www.romasparita.com/. Made famous by Anthony Bourdain.
Haven’t thought of them in years. Might have to go when there in October!
