Economy lodging for family of 6 in Rome

Myself, my 22 year old son and my daughter with 3 kids (1,5,&9) will be in Rome for 2 nights in early September. we need the cheapest room(s) possible as we are splurging in Ponza next. Nothing fancy and prefer a real Italian neighborhood. We appreciate any ideas or experience you may have.

More people will probably see your inquiry if you post it in the regular Italy forum rather than under "Trip Reports".

I would be looking into renting an apartment rather than a hotel stay. You might start looking on Vrbo or Airbnb. The added bonus of a washing machine might be handy.

www.cross-pollinate.com is another respected vacation rental site that focuses on just a few cities, Rome being one of those, and the organizers of it live in Rome.

The problem with an apartment in this situation is that they are only staying 2 nights. 3 nights seems to be the minimum on many apartments. Apartments are wonderful especially for families with little ones.

One of the most affordable places I've found that had airconditioning and quality reviews was this place:

The person I communicated with for reservations was extremely helpful.

If an apartment sounds appealing to you, I would not give up the idea. Doing a very quick search on Airbnb for 2 nights, first week of September (midweek) with the filter set for places with washing machines, it brought up well over 100 possibilities under $120 per night.

Thanks all! I will post in travel forum and am working on checking the links. We are now only staying 1 night as we decided to stay in Formia on the second night to make catching the ferry with 3 kids easier. I truly appreciate all your help.
