Has anyone stayed in Civitavecchia? We have a few days between a tour ending in Lucca and a cruise starting in Civitavecchia. Looking for hotel and restaurant recommendations in Civitavecchia.
I can't vouch for it yet because we don't visit until October but they've been very responsive during the booking process. If you have a few days I probably wouldn't stay in Civitavecchia, it's fine, but not really a tourist destination. We're spending a few days in Tivoli and then the day before we'll head to Civitavecchia. There is a laundromat within walking distance of the hotel that we plan to use before we board the ship the next day.
There is almost nothing in Civit.... It is a gritty port town with some Tuscan reins near by. An overnight would be ok but if more than one night I would take the train to Rome -- about an hour and very easy to do. We have passed through Civit.... seven or eight times but never stayed long.
There is almost nothing in Civit..
I'm always bemused by folk who say that. When on the way to Rome or the shuttle bus to and from the station for the airport, if people took time to stop at the Information stand they would find there is more to the town.
I haven't stayed there, but have explored it rather than just go into Rome for the day.
It is actually something of a seaside resort for the Citizens of Rome (albeit with a pebbly beach).
So there are several hotels, and quite a few of what look like authentic local Italian restaurants (they should be as all the foreign tourists only have Rome on their minds so the primary market is locals).
Tucked away in the back streets is quite a charming Old Town and a Cathedral. There is Fort Michelangelo to explore which you pass on the buses out of port.
There is also the Taurine Baths and the Ficoncella Thermal Baths close by.
Also there is the chance to go to and from Rome before/after the day trippers, and use the fast IC trains rather than the commuter trains.
It's also about 2 hours on the IC trains up the coast to Livorno and Pisa.
The Isle of Elba should be reachable as well, as a long day trip.
There are also ferries to several ports in Sardinia, as a side attraction.
I could certainly very happily spend several nights in Civitavecchia, but I'm not your average cruiser.
