We followed Rick Steve’s recommendation and stayed at Hotel Villa Steno and it was incredible! Matteo and Carol (the owners) contacted us early to see when we would be arriving and arranged a taxi to get us from the train station. When we arrived, they came out to meet us and welcomed us with a stack of information. The hotel is beautifully appointed, the food is great, and the service was outstanding. All of the staff treated us like royalty. And as a bonus, we got $30 off a night and free drinks for the Rick Steve discount (it just required paying cash).
Good to hear as our RS tour will be staying here September 14th and 15th. We will be arriving by train and walking to the hotel or alternatively looking for a taxi to take the 3 of us up, up, up to the hotel. How did you find the stairs down and up into the town of Monterosso itself?
I HIGHLY recommend having the hotel arrange a taxi for you from and to the train station. It's not a long distance, but slogging luggage through a tunnel, up a long hill, and then up a VERY steep driveway would not be fun. It's 20 euro (cash) one way, but I feel it's worth it.
As for getting into town once you're there, the hotel has a nice stairway through a garden that leads to an alley to the main street. There's a locked gate that you can access with your hotel key card.
Many thanks for your reply. Sounds like a taxi to get there!
