Cheaper Stays in Venice?

My husband and I will be staying in Venice for two nights, May 19 and 20th. We are finding a hard time finding place to stay on the lower end. We had hoped to stay with friends of friends but that has fallen through. We would like to stay somewhere for under 130 Euros a night, I realize with our timing this may be hard to do. Any recommendations?

Does anyone have experience with Hotel Santa Lucia or Hotel Bernardi in Venice?

Thank you!

Have you looked at monasterystays.com? I have never stayed at one of the monasteries, but perhaps you will find a price that will work for you?

Good luck.

Hotels.com has 5 or 6 listings in your price range that are available for your dates and are really in Venice. Rick's guidebook lists about the same number in your price range, Hotel Santa Lucia being on of those with a "simple and clean" description.

Just make sure you choose Venice Island and not Mestre (the industrial mainland). Choosing the latter does NOT give you the same experience as staying directly on the island. Yes you can train into Venice, visit, then train back to Mestre...NOT the same thing as stepping foot out the front door and being on Venice Island. There are also neighboring islands like Guidecca that, while close and connected by vaporettos, still force you to do the trek back and forth and isn't the same as staying on Venice Island.

There are indeed low cost accommodations directly on Venice Island including Hotel Santa Lucia and Pensione Guerrato to name just a couple. Learn to use Tripadvisor and to read reviews about the hotels you find.

don't discount the idea of staying at Jesolo ( on the beach) and catching the ferry over to Venice, which is a nice thing to do ( arriving on the water) there would be plenty of accommodation options there at that time of year. also it is great for also catching the ferry to murano etc
we found it an very interesting place to stay, in complete contrast to 'old italy'.

hope this helps.

We have stayed at Hotel Santa Lucia many times and have always been very happy with our stay. In warm weather the breakfast in the garden is lovely. You are only a 5 minute or less walk from the train station down a little and very quiet pedestrian only Calle. The owners are very always welcoming, helpful and friendly and the rooms are spotless.

I commonly look for rooms on Booking.com--filtering for low prices first and looking for customer ratings that are substantially higher than others in the same price range. Never been dissatisfied.
The cheaper rooms out at Venice seem to be around the railroad station. It's an easy jump on a vaparetto out to St. Marks Square or it's also an easy walk if you turn left when coming out of the train station to St. Marks.

When we visited Venice, we stayed in Padua. It was only a 20 minute train ride to the city and then we had Vaporetto passes for the length of our stay. They were a bargain. I did not feel like we missed out on staying in the city. Of course walking though the city at night is romantic and having a balcony over the water, but we still managed our evening walks and boat rides. (Also, Padua is amazing on its own too.)

I've stayed at Pension Guerrato twice. I like the location (near the Rialto Bridge) and it's very reasonably priced for Venice.

My family stayed at Ca' Badoer dei Barbacani for two nights. We had a lovely room that was really a small apartment with a kitchenette. Near the Frari Church, amazingly reasonable, and not far from the vaporetto stop (San Toma). Ketty is amazing; she speaks perfect English and is so helpful. We loved it, and I'd definitely stay again.

We stayed at Crowne Plaza Venice East-Quarto d'Altino. It was about $100.00 and my sister paid $90.00. The rooms were huge by American standards and nice. They upgraded us since I was an IHG member. It was a 2 minute walk to the train station a 28 minute train ride to get to the grand canal. The hotel is located in the middle of a very normal very lovely neighborhood. Zoneing laws must be different. There was the absolutely best and inexpensive pizza place down the street. This is a great option if you can't find an affordable place in central Venice.

I stayed at the Casa Caburlotto through MonasteryStays - it's conveniently located about four blocks south of the Piazzale Roma. There are lots of other locations, some much more central.

Thank you for all the recommendations! These forums are such a great way to connect with fellow travelers and commentators never disappoint!

After emailing 2/3 of the lodges in Rick's Italy 2017 book we found a place to stay for a good price!

Our family of six has stayed at Pensione Guerrato twice. WONDERFUL location in the heart of Venice, near the Rialto Bridge, and right by a wonderful outdoor fruit/vegetable/fish market. Very reasonable prices, and easy to hop on/off the vaporetto. I think Rick Steves tour groups use this place a lot, so if you are visiting when they are, you may have a hard time getting a reservation. But worth a try!

Me and wife wife are booked to stay in Venice May 16 - 19th. We looked for months to find a good deal, and we finally found one on AirBnb. We got a canal view apartment for around 150 dollars/night. We actually wound up booking AirBnb for our entire Italy trip (Rome, Florence, Riomaggiore, and Venice).
