Charming B&B in Siena: Antica Residenza Cicogna

We recently spent 5 nights in Siena, and at the recommendation of a member of our local travel group stayed at the Antica Residenza Cicogna. I find the word “charming” often overused, but it's the right descriptor for this lovely B&B.

Located at Via delle Terme 76, the Residenza is in easy walking distance of the Campo and the Duomo, but far enough away from those bustling areas to be quiet and peaceful. It's also close to the Piazza Gramsci bus station, and there are many places to eat nearby.

The Cicogna is run by Elisa and Ilaria, both helpful and welcoming (and charming.) Neither of them lives there, and they usually leave in the afternoon but can be reached at other times, if necessary. We had originally planned this trip for 2020, and as the pandemic situation progressed, made repeated changes in our itinerary. Elisa and Ilaria were very easy to work with throughout the entire time. On our arrival they provided us with maps, a list of recommended shops and restaurants in the area, and their contact info. Should you arrive when they aren't there, they will give you a code to get into the building, and leave your key and information packet on the reception desk.

The B&B is fairly small, with 5 rooms and 2 suites. There are lovely public areas, including a big lounge on the first floor up with tables and chairs, as well as a mini fridge and supplies for making tea and instant coffee, including lovely cups and saucers. (Kettles are also available in the rooms.) There is no elevator, but I think all the rooms are on the first floor up. I'm not sure where the suites are. The rooms do have a/c. The public areas are... well, just charming, with quaint corridors wandering through, and lovely eclectic décor.

All the rooms are frescoed and beautifully furnished. The rooms are named for their décor; we stayed in the Stanza dei Leoni, and lions were indeed a feature in the furniture and artwork. Our room was large and airy, with two big windows opening onto the Via delle Terme. It also had comfortable heavy chairs, a heavy table that served as a desk, and a large wardrobe. The small bathroom was en suite, and had a small window for ventilation.

Breakfast is good; you will find bread, cheese, salami or ham, boiled eggs, fruit, yogurt, plenty of sweets, and cold cereals. A pot of American style coffee is on the buffet, but someone (usually Ilaria) is there to prepare other coffee drinks for you.

I loved our room, but when we return I will probably ask for a different one. Although the street is pretty quiet, for some reason what street noise there is is magnified and shot straight up and into our room through the open windows. It defied reason; if people were conversing as they walked along, we could hear every word very clearly. This was a problem at night, especially. Morning trash pickups and deliveries were annoying, as well. If you use the a/c and keep the windows closed, the noise will not be a problem. Closing the windows tightly kept out almost every sound. Earplugs work well, too.

With that as the only caveat, I highly recommend this B&B. It was clean and well maintained, with every need met. Oh, a double room with breakfast was €105 per night, plus the city tax of €2 per night. A real bargain. And charming.

Jane, thank you for your review. It sounds “Charming” lol. My family and I will be in Siena for a day trip while staying in Florence this October. I will make the effort to check this charming little place out. A dream of mine is to spend a week in the tranquil area of Tuscany and this just may be the perfect fit. Again thanks for sharing.

We stayed there on our first trip to Italy in 2010. Lovely place indeed!
