Budget option near Milano Centrale

There is a new budget option near Centrale, the B & B Hotel. We did not stay there as we had booked our favorite, the Hotel Berna, but B & B looked very moden and online reviews are good. Rates are a bit over €100 for two with breakfast. Rates at other locations around Milan are even lower.

Me too! I love Hotel Berna (especially the breakfast buffet). But if B&B Hotel is a chain I think I stayed at one in Germany a couple years ago and it was fine.

I don't mind a Hotel B&B, having stayed at a few.

Almost always easy parking, a room that is just about big enough for two people to pass, a simple but adequate bathroom, comfy beds, cheap prices, a filling simple but tasty and adequate breakfast at a low price, and pleasant staff. Room vending machine if the desk is closed or momentarily unstaffed. No level shelves or flat areas anywhere if that is important. One chair.

In France they often give a discount coupon to some local restaurants and the nearest Flunch.

In France near the autoroute we usually get away with between 40€ and 60€, about 5€ or 10€ more in Germany. I guess for being near the station in central Milan they would have to ask more. The price is usually fairly steady, based on demand but always fair.

That is great detail, Nigel. Sounds like a one-night sort of place to me, but a great budget stretcher.

I stayed there for a couple of nights this past May. It was indeed modern and clean, except for cigarette butts on the balcony. Breakfast was carb heavy and only so-so (not unusual for Italy). Luggage storage filled up early on day of departure, they do not have remotely enough space and just shrugged. Worst was that they insisted upon payment upon check in, not disclosed upon booking. Otherwise it was fine and great location. I was kind of crabby by the time I reached Milan so that might influence my view of the place. I think the Motel One chain might also require payment upon check in.

Most budget chains expect payment before arrival or at least at check in. With a room vending machine you call up your reservation on a screen after putting in your credit card and it takes payment and gives you a code for the door. In the morning you just have breakfast - or not - and leave. No queueing to check out...
