My wife is somewhat mobility challenged, and we travel with her riding a personal portable scooter. We've learned to adapt to her condition. She can get around most European cities.

We've had to stay in more modern hotels with elevators--for one. And we're avoiding undergrounds (subways) without lifts (elevators.) We also take more taxi's than we used to.

When we were in Venice last year, we met our match with her unable to handle the arch bridges. We would also avoid places like Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast as there's just too much elevation change, steps, etc.

Good luck on the visit to Europe after a hip replacement. But always have a Plan B if you find that some places are just too difficult to walk in.

Given mobility considerations, would recommend Monterosso as homebase as its train station is one of the few places in CT to find a taxi (if you should need one upon arrival). Hotel Pasquale is a wonderful choice, offering amazing beach/coast views from the rooms; and they have an elevator to make getting from the lobby to any of the floors a non-issue. The proprietor family who run the hotel are wonderful hosts, and you'd be centrally located to both the Old Town and the Harbor for catching a ferry to neighboring towns (if they're running as early as April, right about the cut-line for 'season' starting). The hotel also prepares great breakfasts as part of the room rate. We stayed there for 5 nights in 2015 and would absolutely make it our choice again when we go back.

Get a reservation at Hotel Porto Roca in Monterosso. It is situated up a bluff with beautiful sea views, wonderful dining room too.
