Mario’s Gelato and Bakery! Just steps away from the main Piazza Tasso. Every year we take at least a month and travel around part of a European country. This year it was Rome/Lazio, Abruzzo, Puglia, Matera, and Sorrento/Amalfi Coast. Enjoying good food is an important part of our travel. While walking down the tiny historic street of Via Santa Maria della Pieta that Rick Steves mentions in his guide book, we happened on this brand new (only three weeks old) bakery. It was ALL locals getting coffee and pastries in the morning so we tried it - absolutely the best cornetti (croissants) in all of our travels this month. The plain ones were not as sweet as so many have been - and they were flakier- more like a classic French croissant. The coffees were smooth and well prepared. We went back several times and all of the baked goods and gelato we tried lived up to a five-star review - and I am usually very picky. We learned that the young man who opened it learned the art of baking from his family who have a locally famous cafe in town. This is a gem. Via Santa Maria della Pietà, 10, Sorrento, Italy
Thank you so much for the tip. We will be In Sorrento at the end of this month!
So will we. Thank you!
I have four nights I Sorrento next month..did you find any great restaurants? Thanks!!
@escrunchy,
Yes several recommended by friends who have local Italian family. All the normal ones you’ll see recommended in Rick’s guidebooks plus:
Pizza in Sorrento: Lieve
Pizza in Naples: Diego Vitagliano (number 2 pizza in Italy; number 4 in the world)
Lo Stuzzichino- they often can arrange transport and it is worth it. Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant.
Lynn!!
How did I miss your kind response??
I am SO happy that you mentioned LO STUZZICHINO, because it's at the top of my list for dinner during my four nights in Sorrento next month. I was trying to figure out how I could avoid the horribly expensive taxis to get there (taxis could cost more than dinner, I imagine) ..so it's great to know that they offer transportation!! Should I just ask for this when I book my table..or have my hotel phone them??
I would have your hotel phone them - we had a local do that and it worked better than their online systems. :-)
Will do, and thank you so much!!
