Ending our RS tour in Florence in October. Traveling by train to Rome to catch our super early flight home the next morning ( where we found the best priced flight for us). Will have spent several days in Rome already but want to enjoy one last day. Want something in nice part of city, close to some sights which I will gladly see again, good eats and easy trip to airport in early early morning. Any suggestions welcome!!!
How early is your flight?
This will determine whether you need to take a taxi or if you can use the Leonardo Express from Termini. The Leonardo Express starts its first run to the airport at 5:35 AM and arrives at FCO at around 6:05.
Prior to a RS tour in 2014, we had a one night stay at the Albergo Cesari, about a 5 to 10 min. walk to the Pantheon one direction, 5 to 10 min. walk to Trevi Fountain the other direction. It's also very close to Piazza Navona. We liked the hotel so much that we booked it again when we were in Rome with a group of friends last June. All of our friends loved this hotel just as much as we did. A perfect area of Rome for your last night, and when you've done all the walking you want to do, go back to the hotel and enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine on the rooftop bar, a lovely setting to reflect on how wonderful your trip has been! Both times we booked this hotel, the room prices were far below other hotels in this area. The hotel's services include arranging a car ride to the airport. I believe the fee for that is 50 Euro for one to three people, but 10 Euro extra if you need to be picked up before 7 a.m. That's not a bad price at all when you consider what you'd spend to take a cab to the train station and then buy two Leonardo Express tickets to the airport, and even if the cab/train were a lot cheaper, it may not be an option for you because of your very early flight. The hotel will get the car there for you as early as you need it. For our 9:30 a.m. flight home, the hotel consierge suggested we have the car arrive at 7:15. It is a 45 min. ride and they said that check in at 8 a.m. would be adequate for our 9:30 flight. We were wary of that advice and had the car pick us up at 6:00 a.m. The ride was indeed 45 min. When we got to the airport, check in was a breeze and we had over two hours to sit and wait in our gate.
We also stayed at Albergo Cesari, and I agree with Vickie that it was a great location (we stayed there 4 days). The airport transportation they reserved was very professional, and we also arrived earlier to the airport. That ended up to be beneficial because our Amsterdam to Seattle flight was cancelled, and the Rome airport personnel were able to quickly switch our flights home.
Yes, the rooftop is nice! We also enjoyed walking around the Pantheon area at night - lots of local entertainment and gelato nearby.
