Been to Sorrento? Help me decide--

U.S. family of 4--husband, wife, 22-year old and 16 year old will spend 4 nights in Sorrento, followed by 4 in Rome.

Really torn about Sorrento lodging:
We currently have Maison Tofani booked. It has great reviews and location seems very good. I just worry that it may feel a little too awkward? for our older kids. I know, I know, it's unbelievably nice but will the kids like the vibe?

Our other option was Grand Hotel Aminta, which also looks very nice--though I hear some frustration about getting up and down that hill efficiently.

So, which one would you choose for us? Or do you have a better one in mind. (I'm sure there is better...but we are looking at total budget of about $300/US per night (excluding taxes and fees).

Please share your wisdom!

Hi Roger,
My husband and I were in Sorrento last year in September. We stayed at Villa Sabrina Relais. It is an amazing villa. I believe I paid $150 a night. very clean and the staff are great. Check the place out on booking.com
Pack your bathing suit! an amazing infinity pool. Free breakfast! It is up on the hill with private free car parking. view of the ocean. They will even take you to the ferry terminal to catch a ferry to Capri Island. I strongly recommend that you do Amalfi coast. The bus tour is about $10. actually, I am not sure exactly how much but it was very cheap. It is a red bus called CitySightseeing. When you get to the bus stop there will be lots of people lining up for the tour but it is the wrong bus. the actual tour bus stop is behind this public bus stop. so be careful you don't sign up for the wrong one. It is very misleading of them to lure tourist like that. We almost fell for it, but the lady at the real bus tour honored our public transport ticket. it is only a couple of dollars more.
In Rome, ask at the ticket counter for un underground unescorted tour. Only $2 Roma Vetican pass is great.
Hope this helps. Have fun.

You chose well with Maison Tofani. It has great views, fantastic people who will make you honorary members of the family, and an excellent breakfast. The beds are extra-comfortable. About the vibe- what do you mean? I thinks kids need to experience a wide variety of people and places and learn to adapt to everything they encounter. That's how real life is. I see nothing awkward there for any age. My 21 year old loves being pampered there. They will get a slice of the real Italy here and that is a good thing.

We spent several days in Sorrento in 2013 and LOVED it. We stayed at the Hilton Sorrento Palace and I highly recommend this hotel. The front views are AMAZING, the rooms are roomy enough, clean, bright, modern. The food is EXCELLENT, the pools are so much fun and the grounds are pretty. I've never taken so many pictures of my hotel in my life. Oh yeah, the staff is very helpful and extremely friendly. We hated leaving and held all our other hotels up to the standard of this one......none of the others matched up!! AND....DO NOT miss a tour of the coast. Amalfi and Positano are memories you'll never forget!!! (so is the ride there, LOL)!!

Sorrento is one of the new places where I would actually recommend spending more to be able to stay right on the cliff overlooking the Mediterranean. We chose Grand Hotel Ambasciatori because of it's location and wonderful views and inclusive gourmet breakfast and swimming pool, etc. It has an elevator all the way through the rock down to the sea bathing platform where you can splash around in the clear blue (and cold) water.
