We will have 3 nights in the dolomites and are uncertain where to stay. We like the look of the town Ortsei and will probably go to castrolotto or maybe Santa Christina. We are looking for suggestions of wonderful place you have been. Since there is only one gon dola open at this time of the year (October 21-24) we would like to spend some time hiking.
We don't list any recommendations in Ortisei. However, this town is only 30 minutes from Castelrotto which we do mention. Here are a few suggestions from our Italy book on that town:
Hotel Wolf - www.hotelwolf.it
Hotel Cavallino d'Or - www.cavallino.it
Alla Torre - www.zumturm.com
I hope this helps some.
We stayed here in Sept-Oct 2011, http://www.sovara.it/eng/index.html
And loved it! Better if you have a car.
Had an excellent stay in Castelrotto at Wolf Hotel last October - super clean and really appreciated the laundry facility. The unexpected "Cow Parade" (moving 'decorated' cattle down from the mountains for the coming winter months) through the town was a treat.

We enjoyed Tirlerhof Farm, abt 1/4 mi. out of Castelrotto/Kastelruth, recommended in Rick's Italy book. Great farm house, breakfast, views of the Schlern & the Jaider Family cows coming & going.
Really glad we didn't stay in town, although it was charming.
Wonderful hiking at Alpe di Suisi/Seiser Alm.
Ciao!
Patsy
Ortisei is the perfect location to enjoy the Val Gardena and Dolomiti. It is more "in" the mountains than Castelrotto. We loved Hotel Garni Walter, a short walk from the bus piazza.
Hi Jay,
We were in Ortisei last month and can't recommend staying there enough. We stayed at Hotel Fortuna and it is literally a block and a half to walk to the center of town and the gondola up to the Alpe di Suisi. We spent the say hiking there and it was perfect. The hotel is a small, family run place with great views and prices. We liked that we were the only Americans there. :)
Enjoy!
