Amalfi hotels/B&B recommendations

My wife and I are considering a 3 night stay in the Amalfi area. We have been to Italy before but not the AC. We would like to day trip to Ravello via bus, and perhaps hike back through Atrani. We would also like to take a day to hike to Pontone and back. From Amalfi we will head to Paestrum via Salerno for an overnight. The RS books do not list Amalfi hotels/B&Bs and clearly RS prefers Positano, but Amalfi seems like a more convenient spot geographically for what we wish to do. Keep in mind we will have already spend a few days in both Napoli and Sorrento.

So I have 3 questions:

1- Any recommendations for Amalfi or near by places to stay? We don’t need fancy, just a comfortable bed for two or two singles, and a private toilet/bath.

2- How difficult is the hike down from Ravello to Amalfi through Atrani? We are over 50 but former ballet dancers and fit, and we are used to climbing just about any tower we can, but we are not danger seekers.

3- Coming fro Sorrento, has anyone any comments regarding the Sorrento CitySight Seeing red buses? How about seasonal boats from Sorrento-Positano-Amalfi-Salerno? The websites aren’t posting the Sept-Oct schedule yet so I’m just looking for impressions.

Many thanks for any comments

You can take a HOHO bus from the Amalfi Coast to Sorrento. Is that what you wanted to know? Less expensive, is a regular bus though perhaps more crowded. Or you can take a ferry.

I’ve stayed in both Positano and Amalfi and prefer Amalfi for a few reasons: it is less hilly, convenient for bus connections to Ravello and other places on the coast and has fewer tourists. Did I mention it has fewer tourists? I stayed in a small hotel owned by two brothers, the Villa Annalara. It’s a short walk from town center; you walk through a garden, then a tunnel and ride an elevator for about a minute to get to the hotel. The rooms are spacious and the view of Amalfi and the sea from the large terrace is beautiful! A great restaurant is a five minute walk back toward town center. Enjoy dinner at Ristorante il Tari. Great seafood, wonderful service, reasonably priced.

We stayed in both Amalfi and Positano. I preferred Amalfi by far. We took bus to Ravello which was horribly crowded and decided to walk back rather than do it again. The walk was not that difficult and it was interesting-you walk past all these little farms. We weren’t sure where to go when we reached Atrani but found someone to ask who sent us through the outdoor area of a restaurant! Sure enough there was a tunnel to Amalfi on the other side! We are in our 50s too.

We just took the regular bus from Sorrento to Amalfi. The ferries are more pleasant when they work for your route.

Suki: Yes, one of my questions was about the HoHo bus from Sorrento to Amalfi. We are meeting some folks in Amalfi for a few days of hiking, and would like to experience the scenic, windy roads from Sorrento to Amalfi without the expense of a private car. It seems to me the HoHo/Red CitSight Seeing buses are only a few more euros than the SITA, and most likely less crowded and more pleasant. Any thoughts on this perspective would be appreciated. Thanks.

BethFL: We are from FL too. So the RS Italy 2019 refers to the hike down from Ravello's Villa Cimbrone to Amalfi for hardy hikers. My wife and I are in our young 60s. We are not sure if we are "hardy hikers" but we are fit and though we live in flat FL, we did all sorts steep hiking in Cinque Terra last year. Those were some challenging steep climbs for us but certainly achievable and we enjoyed the challenge. You state the hike down from Ravello to Atrani was not difficult. If you care to expand a bit that would be appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks everyone. We decided to stay in Amalfi and are all booked. Everyone's suggestions have been helpful and with your input and a little internet searching, we have been able to find everything we needed. For those still on their trip, we look forward to any future comments you may have. Thanks again. LF
