We are looking for the best area to stay in for a family of 4 in Venice. We will be coming by train from Bologna. 2 kids 10,13. We would like to be near the sights but relax. Also of course by areas to buy food to cook. This is for August
We stayed at an Airbnb in the San Polo area. Not too far a walk from Rialto (maybe 5 min) and there were restaurants/small grocery nearby, as well as the market. You are probably going to be having slim pickings now if it's for this August. I know it's only June, but the good ones book up months ahead in most cases. I think we booked ours 4 to 5 months out.
I just checked the apartment we stayed at and she is booked solid thru Sept and almost all of October. Good luck!

Check out the reviews. We loved it! Close to everything and watching the gondoliers on the canal would be fun for the kids.
We also stayed at the noted above Chimney Sweep apt. in San Marco, a short walk from Rialto vaporetto stop. We four adults found it to be very handy in location, quiet, comfortable bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and well equipped kitchen for cooking meals if we wished. We were welcomed by Kim at the vaporetto stop and by a cold and delicious bottle of Proscecco waiting in the fridge when we checked in. My husband lost a crown and our hostess Kim lined up a dentist, accompanied us to said dentist and stayed on to translate for the dentist and my husband. If we make a 3rd trip to Venice, we will try to book this suite again.
We just left Venice yesterday and stayed here: https://www.veniceredhouse.com/properties/agnus-dei/
It was absolutely gorgeous. Found it on vrbo but you rent directly through the company. They have several rental properties in Venice and were super easy to work with. The location of this flat was in a more residential area, so away from the crowds but a 5 minute walk to groceries, 10 minutes to Rialto and about 20 to San Marco. AC in every room too!
I would rent from them again in an instant. Can't recommend enough. DM me if you have any questions about it.
We have a trip planned in Sept, including Venice. This is the Air bnb we have chosen. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/2843847. It is a 5 min walk to the Venice Mestre station. We are on a very limited budget, and are very willing to stay out a bit to save money. Very highly rated on Air bnb.
