Looking for country base near train line to Siena and Florence for 2023. Planning a 2 week stay with side trips to small towns.

Several years ago we stayed at the Agriturismo Martignana about 10km south of Empoli.
We had a car, but we parked by the station and were able to take the train into Florence, Sienna and Pisa without any problems.
If you don´t have a car, it is a bit more difficult, but there is a bus that runs through Martignana to Empoli.

Kathy - We are hoping to get by without a car until we arrive at small-town Tuscany. Then we may have to rent a car to get around the area.

I can’t imagine getting around that area easily without a car.

I think I'm reading in your message that you're open to renting a car for the smaller Tuscan towns but hoping to avoid driving in Siena, Florence, and the like. I recently stayed 5 nights at the wonderful agriturismo Il Vecchio Meneggio just a few miles outside San Gimignano. I did drive from the Florence airport (not much fun at all) and into Siena (not too dfficult to park near the escalators leading up to the Duomo area.) At this agriturismo you do need a car, but it's only 12 km to Poggibonsi, which I think is on the train line to both Florence and Siena. It's an easy country drive from the farm to Poggibonsi. I don't know how often the train runs to Florence, but I can certainly see the advantages of taking it!

I loved this farm. It's on the rustic side rather than the luxury side, but I felt like a guest on a family friend's farm. Both breakfast and dinner are included in the room rate, and the dinners were amazing, multi courses with wine. And there are horses and trail rides!

I often will go to Google Maps and enter the name of a city (or village). Click on the Show Hotels at the top. Then hit "+++" to magnify the map.

Up pops many hotels, B&B's and agriturisimo's in the vicinity. Sometimes the prices are listed on the icons. Click on them and you can get to their individual websites. Customer comments are also available.

Tuscan farms are relatively small, and the owners have to have apartments and rooms as a secondary source of income. We last stayed between San Gimignano and Certaldo--5 miles from Poggibonsi--on a small farm/winery. There were literally hundreds of farms in the area serving tourists. That area is hard to beat--45 minutes from Florence.

Or, you can also go onto Booking.com or VBRO.com for accommodations on agriturisimos.

Oh, by the way. Tuscany is a place that's best visited by automobile. It's very hilly, and you want to be able to see the region without having to deal with a bus schedule.

The roads are very well paved and they're also well marked. Driving throughout the region is not difficult, especially if you can handle a stick shift.

YOU WILL WANT TO PICKUP THE RENTAL CAR IN FLORENCE. SMALL RURAL CITIES OFTEN HAVE NO RENTAL AGENCIES.

Almost by definition an agriturismo is never near a train station. Plus the train system in Tuscany is not very extensive. The best you can hope for would be near a bus stop. This is an area that you really need a car and a map to the parking areas around the cities. Good luck.

We have been to that area a number of times. I would not know how you could cover much without a car. If at all possible I would look into renting one as almost all agriturismo’s are outside of towns. It’s such a beautiful area with so many amazing spots I would definitely want a car.
