agriturismi between Bari & Matera

Hello travel friends,

My husband and I will be taking a road trip. We will begin by picking up a car at the Bari airport and heading north along the east coast to Rimini and then over to Bologna (car factory tours - a huge bucket-list item for my husband) before dropping off the car in Rome to return home. We have only 6 days, so much of what we see will be determined as we go.

Everyone has told us that we must see Matera. I'm wondering if anyone has a personal recommendation for a agriturismi about halfway between Bari and Matera? We can stay only one night and want the charm of Matera (maybe at night?) but also, the pasta in Bari.

All recommendations are appreciated. Ciao!

You should be able to locate several possibilities with a Google search for “Puglia Masseria”. That is the Pugliese term for agriturismo. We booked Masseria Aprile just south of Locorotondo, based on a personal recommendation from a forum member, but we had to cancel that trip. It does look very nice, especially if you want to stay in a Trullo.

However, it would be a bit out of your way if you are heading up the coast afterwards (and so is Matera, but with 6 days to reach Bologna you should have time for that).

Have you chosen your stops up the coast? We were pleasantly surprised by Rimini, which we only knew as a beach town. But it has a lovely old town area, with Roman ruins, a castle, and a beautiful Roman bridge from the 1st Century A.D. Pedestrians still use it, especially for the evening passegiata.

We stayed at very modern Hotel Aria, with a friendly and welcoming staff and a very nice room, and I would recommend it. They have a secure parking garage (although we arrived by train so did not take advantage of that).

This was early March last year, so the town was very quiet, and the room inexpensive. We did not use the pool!!!

I would really recommend to explore airbnb stays as well as you can find wonderful places in city centres which you would otherwise miss. Before you leave Puglia, you should spend at least one day there to see these three gems: I absolutely love Martina Franca, I have stayed in a small beautiful garden apartment just behind the cathedral and I paid something like £60 per night for a 5* location! You should also not miss Locorotondo and Ostuni.
I usually fly to Bari and make my way around these towns as I find it inspiring for writing my textbooks about language learning - The beauty of Puglia is one that inspires me to create valuable content.
Happy travels and hope you get to see as much as possible in those 6 days!
