We will be staying in Dublin for 2 nights and then driving to Kilkenny where we we will stay for 2 nights also. Considering driving through the Wicklow mountains as a side trip to see the scenery. Trying to decide if the time would be better spent going straight to Kilkenny and having more time there.
When is the trip?
I did this drive in the early 90’s with 2 friends. We loved it. Its was on the Old Military Road. Was in the Fall. Some early AM drizzle but fine after. Visited Glendalough, St Kevin’s Church, cemetary and the Round Tower. Then headed off on the narrow road. Drove slowly admiring the beauty, the sheep and we came upon beautiful Coolalingo Waterfalls. Believe I said “ bury me here.” If memory serves took about 2 hours to get to Kilkenny. Maybe longer as we kept stopping to take photos.
In my 2 trips to Eire ( always in the Fall ) its been about slowing down, meeting the people, fresh seafood, brown bread and craic.
The Monastic City and a walk in the Glendalough area to see a waterfall were very worthwhile. En route you could stop in Avoca to see the woolen mill. It was also the filming location of the old UK tv series Ballykissangel..
The main high speed freeway to Kilkenny is not very scenic so if you have the time, your detour sounds good!
Thanks everyone for your input. Sounds like I'd better keep Wicklow in my plans.
