I am planning my first Rick Steves' trip to Ireland in August 2025. I am traveling solo and will be in Ennis for 2 nights before I join my group. Where is the best place for me to stay in Ennis? What are some good local tourist attractions within walking distance?
We were just there and we stayed at the Old Ground Hotel for one add'l night before the tour. That was the same hotel as the tour. The tour doesn't spend any time at all in Ennis itself, so we just walked around town. The old abbey and friary and a museum are about the only sights to see, as well as shopping and a nice river walk. I'm sure there are more sights, but we didn't want to go further.
We were in Ennis in May. I agree that there is not much to see and do in the town, although the music scene at night in the pubs is a lot of fun. I’m not sure where you’re going on the RS tour, but it’s an easy walk from the Old Ground to the train station, and a short train ride to Galway, where you could spend a day. I’m sure there are other day trips you could make by train as well.
We were in Ennis as a day trip from Doolin, and took a very pleasant two hour walking tour with Jane O’Brien. She's descended from the O'briens that helped win equality for the Catholics and she knows everyone in the town.
Call the RS tour office and get the name of your tour hotel in Ennis (if you don't have it already). Stay at that same hotel for your two days before the tour starts. You may run into other tour members who have also arrived before the tour starts. Ennis is a rather quiet place, so get over your jet lag and relax.
We stayed at the Knockaderry House, a few minutes out of town (a quick Uber ride or a long walk). It was the sweetest B & B, very homey, lovely continental breakfast, very quiet and comfortable room. Gerry and Mary, the innkeepers, were very kind and attentive. It was a great place to stay before beginning our tour at the Old Ground Hotel the next day.
