I am so tempted to get a mini. It is me and my son and we will each have a carry on and medium suitcase. We are doing a lot of driving from the airport and then to wexford, kenmore, gap dunlop, ding, doolin, galway an back to dublin. The other choices are economy or compact. Anyone have any advice on car size?
Other considerations can be: ability to completely conceal the presence of ALL luggage while visiting attractions between hotel stays. Delivery of an automatic transmission as promised, or NOT. Your physical sizes. Any need to drive unpaved roads. Insurance costs. Amount of highway driving. Size of the cars you drive at home. Pricing.
I always reserve the smallest car I can. But since it has to be an automatic, I don't get a choice of a mini, so it's generally the next size up. That's for 2 of us.
Are you getting an automatic transmission? When I rented earlier this year, the smallest automatic was in the economy class. For my husband and me, I rented the smallest 4-door automatic available. My only advice is to get something in which all your luggage can be stored out of sight. That may not be possible with a mini.
Thanks! That is true the smallest is economy as an automatic. I am going with a two door automatic economy size. Thanks!!
Good choice but definitely make certain your luggage will be hidden in the boot ( that’s the term in Eire for trunk of the car) and not visible.
You’ll appreciate the smallness of the car on the Gap of Dunloe.
We always use AutoEurope for a car rental in Europe. They are a consolidator, ie rent cars from most car rental companies. We have never had a problem even when we had 2 flat tires on one trip to Scotland. They are available to help 24/7. One must pay for the rental at the time it is booked but one can change it later on and they refund the payment for the first rental dates. If you call up to ask a question, you will talk to someone knowledgeable. They are only located in Maine!
hey Jennifer I like your choices but I would not get a two door if possible. You will need the back seat for stuff even with just a couple of carry ons. I totally support the small car idea but would opt for a four door if you get the choice. The 4 doors are really no bigger and you get a back seat for stacking stuff....the small four doors are a breeze to park. We actually got a Seat city car, 5 door that included a hatch and it had all the power we needed, easy to park, easy to turn around (when you get lost and miss a turn) and the hatch allowed us to place stuff in the back that was covered. Go for a 4-5 door if possible.
Thats great advice! I will consider upgrading when we land for that reason. It seems like everyone agrees that bags need to be in the trunk.
We rented a VW Polo - lots of room in the trunk for 2 small/medium sized luggage and small enough to navigate the smaller secondary roads. My husband is 6'3" and both of us were comfortable.
