In reading the post about cellular usage using Verizon I thought I'd ask about AT&T. I just switched my cell phone plan to AT&T from Verizon! I had an international plan for my trip to Ireland from AT&T 4 years ago for my IPAD that was reasonable while my husband used the Verizon plan for his IPhone. I found out AFTER I switched that this plan is no longer in effect and they charge something pretty expensive for international usage on phones and IPADS even if you are in a WIFI zone (that is my understanding). I was thinking about signing up for Viber. Thoughts?
We have ATT and we just use their 30-day international plan for phone calls and texts on his IPhone and my dumb phone. He keeps data switched "off" and uses wifi (for free) whenever we can get on a secure network---most hotels and apartments will have that. I use it for my iPad too ( it is not cellular-enabled). There is no charge to use wifi.
Barbara, do a Search on "AT&T" here and you'll find other recent threads about their plans. They are heavily promoting their $10/day plan for international service, but they still do offer the other kinds of plans - limited service for $40/month, higher for more data, etc. It is hard to find the right links on their pages but you can find them by getting past the $10/day plan.
[edit] google up AT&T International Passport Plan and see if you can find it.
We recently used the $10/day plan and worked well for us. We only needed to make calls a couple of days so were only charged for those days. The rest of the time, we used WiFi at the hotels, and Facebook for email, etc. We keep the phones on airplane mode the whole time. We looked at the other plans, which we've used before and so know they are still available.
